Why Making a Capsule Wardrobe is Perfect for Studying Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

Once I started this for study abroad, I went on a closet purge

This coming January, I’m going to study abroad in Valencia, Spain. As exciting as it is, the struggle is packing. I can only bring two suitcases with me so I don’t want to waste space on unnecessary items. My solution was to start a capsule wardrobe. Once I started making one for my suitcase, I moved onto my closet on a much needed purge.

Here’s the answer to the much awaited question: What is a capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is a minimalist approach to your wardrobe which saves you space in your closet and is more efficient for seasonal changes. The “capsule” is the basic part of your wardrobe that can go with any garment you have.

The first step of making a capsule wardrobe is picking out your base color. The base color applies mostly to your bottoms. Then once your bottoms are sorted out you can match everything else to them. The color I picked for my base was black. The other colors you can pick if you don’t like black are navy or brown.

Once I had my bottoms picked out, I picked out tops that were neutral colors to go with them. To spice up your selection a little bit, you can pick out two accent colors. My accent colors are powder blue and blush. Of course you can pack other accessories just for fun which can be a different color. Most of my tops were white and grey so I had some wiggle room into what else I could add. The trick to your capsule wardrobe is that each top has to match at least three bottoms so you have more outfit combination.

Having a capsule wardrobe is the ultimate way to pack light and be stylish. It’s also an easy way to purge your closet of things you don’t wear anymore. Then you’ll have room for new clothes that you buy when you travel
