Top 5 Inspirational Women of the 21st Century

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

Buzzfeed posted an article that has the 51 Most Inspirational Women of the 21st century. I chose five that I believe are the most inspirational and why.

Michelle Obama

As a former First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama has implemented many programs within the eight years her husband served as President. The most notable program she helped initiate was the “Let’s Move” campaign. She encouraged kids to get up and move and be active and engaged.

One of her inspirational quotes is: “One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don’t invest any energy in them, because I know who I am.”

Ellen DeGeneres

As a lesbian woman, Ellen has paved the way for many people to follow. She was fired from television shows she worked for once she came out to the world. She did not let that stop her, she pushed through and created her own show that has been running for 17 seasons and counting! She promotes kindness and caring behavior all throughout the world and touches millions of people’s hearts on a daily basis.

One of her inspirational quotes is: “Be kind to one another.”

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah is a well known philanthropist, talk show host, broadcast station CEO (she has her own television station called OWN) and actress. She has been paving the way for her career for over 30 years. She has done all of this concurrently and while she has stopped doing some of these things, her legacy lives on. She makes women aware of what they can do and what they are capable of if they just put their minds to it.

One of her most inspirational quotes is: “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

As the second female Supreme Court Justice, Ruth has written several books and allowed women throughout the world to see that nothing should hold you back, especially being a woman. Before finding her place on the Supreme Court, she was a lawyer (and still is), but struggled with gender inequality. Throughout her jobs, she would wear loose clothes while she was pregnant in fear that her contracts would not be renewed – no woman should have to worry about this.

One of her most inspirational quotes: “I do hope that some of my dissents will one day be the law.”

Christiane Amanpour

Christiane is a broadcast journalist, who was one of the first women to report from a war zone. This changed the journalism world because she was showing people all around the world that just because you are a woman does not mean that you cannot do things that men predominately do. Before her, men were the ones going into war zones and getting all the “juicy” and “top” stories, she changed this. She displayed bravery and encouraged women to follow their dreams and do what they want to.

One of her most inspirational quotes: “Because if we the storytellers don’t do this, then the bad people will win.”

Women all over the world are paving the way for future generations of women. Women are strong. Women are worthy. Women are beautiful. Women are equal. Women are powerful. No one should forget that – the women prove this.
