Tips for Dealing with Communal Bathrooms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

Before I arrived at college, one of my main concerns was the dreaded communal bathroom.

I expected it to be like the scene in Pitch Perfect where the Bella walks in on Becca when she hears her singing in the shower and she brings a guy with her. This seemed terrifying to me. However, once I experienced the communal bathroom, I realized it’s not as bad as it seems. Here are a few tips for making communal bathrooms a more pleasurable experience:

1. Always remember your shower shoes!

At stores like Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond or Target, they sell shoes specially made for showering in college which are pretty inexpensive. However, regular plastic flips-flops you wear to the beach will work just as well to protect your feet from the shower floor.

2. Always go in the shower stalls on the ends!

Everyone figures this out pretty fast, but if you shower in the middle stall with the drain in it, your shower will be flooded with all of the other shower water from the outer stalls. Gross!

3. Music in the shower can be fun!

Most people will be glad you have music playing out loud in the shower and might even sing along with you as long as you play good music.

4. Take your hair out of the shower!

The biggest thing to remember about communal bathrooms is to be considerate of everyone else that needs to use the bathroom too.

5. Remember everyone is dealing with the same situation as you!

It just takes time to get adjusted to this new experience and then you will feel at home.
