My Sister Goes to the Same College as Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

When I first started looking at colleges to attend, I never thought I would choose the same one as my sister. My sister is only 14 months older than me, and I would say that we are very close. Many people told me that it was silly to go to the same school as my sister, but it was probably the best decision I have ever made. Going to a new school with people you don’t know is difficult, but knowing I would have a part of home with me was comforting.

We are pretty typical sisters I would say; since I am younger, I am more annoying, and need advice on many things. At school we now have the time to talk about girly things, going out, do homework, and everything in between. My sister has always been hardworking and this motivates me to do my best. She is studying Accounting and getting her masters degree in four years. I am a Communications Marketing major, and my sister helped me reach this decision last year. I was struggling first semester last year with business classes, and realized that path was not for me. My sister helped me look at other options for majors and we found communications marketing. Without her advice I would not have known about this major. For the first time in 14 years of school, my sister and I get to take a class together. It is nice for me to know I will have someone to sit next to and take online quizzes with. My sister also works at the Writing Center, and has helped me become a stronger writer. Now, I am more confident with my writing skills. Even when I procrastinate an essay, she will always revise it no matter the time because she is my sister. This is just one reason why going to the same school as your sister is amazing!

Even when I’m annoying and call my sister at 10:30 at night, she will come. Regardless of the 20 minute walk, she will still show up. My sister is my gym buddy even when I don’t want to go. One of the reasons I do go is because there is a 50/50 chance my sister will fall while running the track. When we play tennis, she motivates me to do better because I hate losing to her. Our competitive sisterly nature always makes the game more interesting.

Although we have our fun moments, she has been with me through my hardest times. Growing up I had two open heart surgeries and my sister has always been there for the doctors appointments and showing me her support as a sister. When I have anxiety, she will always be there to calm me down, and knows what to do because she is my sister. The best part of having a sister is knowing you always have someone there for you. The emotional support of having my sister here with me is nice; she is my home away from home.

Choosing the same school as my sister was the best decision ever, and knowing she is always there is comforting. I would recommend going to the same school as your sister, as it has brought us closer. At the same time, we are independent and we are finding ourselves – and that’s because we know we have each other.
