Meet the Team: Summer ’16 Updates

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

Summer ’16 is well underway, and if you’re wondering how some of us collegiettes have been spending these sunny days, read on!

Susana:

One of our CCs, Susie, is busy spending her workweek on Madison Avenue this summer as an Editorial Intern for Oxford University Press.  At Oxford, Susie is working with the English Language Teaching department, one of the biggest of the American office and a field that perfectly blends Susie’s editorial and ESL/ESOL ambitions.  This position on Madison has also led her to finally start binge watching Mad Men, which has coincidentally led her to believe she is a Mad Man, and no amount of reasoning can talk her out of this!  When she is off the clock, Susie can be found at her gym’s spin classes, cruising in the family Jeep with her newly issued license, or in search of the best brunch/Happy Hour spots in the Westchester/NYC area. She cannot wait to reunite with her teammates and the rest of the Her Campus community this July at Her Conference in NYC!

Megan:

One of our CCs, Megan has been busy spending her summer doing just about everything. She is the communications intern at the JDRF Northeastern New York Chapter, a foundation close to her heart; JDRF helps fund cure-related research and education awareness for type 1 diabetes, a condition that Megan has had since she was 9. In addition, she has been enduring intensive training for her very first JDRF Ride to Cure in Burlington, Vermont in July. She has a goal of raising over $2,000 for JDRF and biking 52 miles in the ride.

When she’s not riding a bike or editing press releases and marketing templates, Megan is babysitting, working as a camp counselor, and working on some side projects she has big expectations for.  Megan is excited to be attending her second annual Her Conference.  She is looking forward to reuniting with friends and running around New York City, and posting pictures of it all on Instagram.  She hopes all of HC Siena’s readers and writers have had equally good summers, and can’t wait to be back in September!

Kristen:

Kristen has been interning at Electronic Products Magazine this summer, producing online content about news in the tech world and managing the publication’s social media. In addition to this, she’s still working remotely as a lead editor for New York Minute Magazine. When she’s not staring at her computer screen, Kristen has gone into Manhattan for adventures such as casual appearances alongside Ryan Gosling on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She can’t wait to join her lovely team members at Her Conference in July!”

Jenna:

Jenna is  spending the summer on campus as a Dake Fellow through the Center for Academic Community Engagement, where she’s developing a community-based research project that creates a storytelling model to empower members of the refugee communities in the Capital Region to share their stories. In her free time, Jenna is exploring more of the Capital Region, eating strawberries, and bothering people with as many puns as possible. She’s super excited to attend Her Conference in July and to reconnect with her lovely HC Siena team members after a semester abroad.

Logan:

First and foremost, Logan hopes everyone’s summer is filled with tons of sun and fun. As for her, she is am working as a summer camp educator at the Children’s Museum of Science and Technology. When Logan isn’t teaching children about the joy of science, she has been puppy sitting her brother’s dog, eating more lobster rolls than her stomach can handle, and enjoying laying out in the hot sun.

Kellyrose:

This summer, Kellyrose will be working as a group leader at a day camp for first grade girls.  On the weekends take a drive upstate to catch her in action as an actor at the NY State Renaissance Faire: she’ll be playing Mistress Jane Tyler in Queen Elizabeth’s court.  Through her acting company, Kellyrose will be traveling to Bristol, Wisconsin to perform Shakespeare in early July! She’ll also be attending Her Conference and I can’t to see her fellow team members there.

Dii:

Dii is currently enrolled in summer classes at Siena until July, and cannot wait until she gets to go home. Dii plans on dying her hair a new color (*fingers crossed*) and then will be heading on a roadtrip to New Orleans with two friends from home!

Katie W.:

For Katie W., this summer has been crazy and amazing because she’s actually organizing her life. She is currently in the process of applying for physician assistant school so her head is spinning with all of the forms and applications! Katie is also taking an online medical terminology class along with working full-time as a medical assistant. Saving money is the game!

On a lighter note, Katie just got back from HAWAII with one of her best friends! Oahu was beautiful and it was a trip filled with warmth and relaxation. On travel Katie says, “It’s a must for me, and I hope to have more great experiences!”

Salomé:

After finishing up her semester abroad in Paris, Salomé visited Madrid and Venice! She’ll be spending the rest of June in France with her family. After returning to the U.S., she’ll be working as a summer camp counselor at Camp Givah (in the Albany area) for the rest of the summer.

Nicole:

African Safaris, horseback rides in Montana’s Big Sky Country, and a rendez-vous on the Seine-that’s just before lunch!  Nicole’s summer internship at Tauck takes her around the world almost every day to breathtaking locations and once in a lifetime activities when she goes to work.  Nicole sees this as the “perfect prelude” to her upcoming semester abroad in Belfast!  In her down time she’s often exploring Connecticut’s state parks and local festivals.  When she’s in the mood for some big city adventures, you can always find her pounding the Manhattan pavement for new adventures.  Her summer mix has the perfect combination of wanderlust, food, friends, and adventure.

Aubrey:

This summer Aubrey has been working on the NEH Shaker Workshop at Siena. The program goes from June 19 to July 2 with two sessions of visiting Shaker sites and having guest lectures. Each session has 36 teachers from all over the U.S. living in Snyder Hall.  She has also been working at Ocean State Job Lot in order to save up for fall semester, which she will be spending abroad in Ireland! On top of those jobs, Aubrey and her friends have created a storytelling troupe called Bright Forest Storytelling that will be telling during the workshop sessions and at Ten Broeck Mansion on July 21st. Aubrey is event coordinator and the group is looking to become an LLC. once they become more established. In the meantime, Aubrey is in the process of selling her house with her mother: this will be her first time every moving! Of course through all this excitement Aubrey has to remind herself that she still has to work on ger Capstone, study for the GRE, and research grad schools: post college is calling!

Karina:

“So this summer I’ve been working my butt-off.”  Working her butt-off indeed as Karina has been juggling a sales associate position at Banana Republic, I adore my coworkers and a hybrid summer course at Siena (Philosophy/Ethics). Karina spent those couple of weeks up Siena with some and despite the fact that she was there for a summer course, found the time enjoyable thanks to getting to hang with some close friends that are local to the Capital region.  Between her class, working, and socializing, she hasn’t had much time for anything else, although she did start Orange is the New Black!! Karina cannot wait to attend Her Conference this July and meet up with her fellow teammates. Karina summed up this summer very bluntly stating: “Honestly, I’m just trying to stay as busy as possible to distract myself from the fact that I will be spending Fall Semester in India. I’m super excited, but I’m also super nervous. It’ll be one of the greatest adventures of my life. But also, how do I pack 6 months worth of tampons, clothes, shoes, etc into one backpack?” We wish her well on all of her coming adventures!

Juliana:

Juliana’s summer has been filled with just about everything, some highlights including: presenting at the Engage for Change conference at Siena, waitressing at the Pine Lake Manor, and even ziplining! And she isn’t stopping there: for the remainder of the summer Juliana has a two week vacation planned (Canada, Niagara Falls, Lake Ontario and Bethany Beach), and she will be undertaking some more outdoor activities such as cliff jumping, hiking, and coaching soccer.

Victoria

Over the summer, Victoria has been in Albany interning for the Times Union! She’s been working in their features department and she says it’s been a fantastic experience; She’s even been published in the print newspaper itself! Since she’s been in Albany, Victoria has also been hanging out with a bunch of different people she wouldn’t have seen until school began. She even went to the Renaissance Faire with a friend…and then bought the Dungeons and Dragons player guide because “we were inspired (we’re still looking for a DM but that isn’t stopping us from making plans).” After she finishes this internship, her family plans on going to Wildwood, NJ and Washington D.C. for a little vacation. Victoria says she, “Can’t wait to hit up the Air and Space museum again!”

Katie:

Katie is excited about Summer of 2016 and is ready to be use it as a platform for memories and great evenings with even better people! Part of her days consist of anti-gravity yoga, getting her zen on, working at her local baseball fields, as well as with a teen who has special needs. She has been hired through New York State as Community Habilitation for this kind-hearted and bright teen. It is important to her that she keeps her summer jobs fulfilling, challenging, but still fun.  Katie says, “You know that saying by Confucius that says “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”? Well it’s pretty accurate. I’m blessed enough to have my “jobs” not feel like work.”

When she’s not working, Katie is with family or my friends.  Her plans for the rest of the summer are to simply enjoy her time being in the best place in the world: her home town. “There is no place greater than here… no offense, Disney World.” So, she’s going to keep on keepin’ on and enjoy this beautiful summer, and she hope all of you beautiful collegiettes do the same.

Rachel:

The highlight of Rachel’s summer is that, in order to fulfill her History Outside of the Classroom requirement for my major, she will be volunteering for a week in July at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, NY.  She will be helping to re-write various elements of their website to show people how interesting and relatable the history of Park is and to make them want to come visit.  It’s not the first thing that Rachel would have thought she would be doing as a volunteer, but she is very excited to get started and learn more about the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848.  Other than that, Rachel will mostly be trying to catch up on the books that are sitting, unread, on her bookshelf and on some of the story ideas she wants to write.

Laurin:

Laurin says her summer has been super boring, BUT it’s about to get interesting. Laurin lives in Saratoga Springs, so she’ll be found at SPAC and the racetrack often. She plans on seeing a bunch of concerts this summer including Dave Matthews, Dead and Company, Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg, Zac Brown Band and Chris Cornell. Other than that, she’ll be lounging by her pool or babysitting (“gotta make money to feed my Crisp addiction”). Laurin will also be having a little Ocean time at Cape Cod, Stone Harbor and the Bahamas. As much fun as this all sounds, Laurin says nothing will compare to reuniting with her Siena friends in the fall.

Katey K:

This summer, Katey K. has been/will be working, hiking, going to the beach, camping, attending concerts at SPAC, and there will be a

family vacation somewhere (“it’s a surprise for me”).
