I Tried These Microwave Mug Recipes so You Don’t Have To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

We have all seen those Facebook videos of easy recipes college kids can make in their dorm room microwave. And we are all thinking the same thing: there is no way that can taste good. Lucky for you, I’m a girl with a surplus of coffee mugs and a love for food. Below are three recipes for snacks that can be easily made in a dorm room microwave! Each recipe was given a score out of five and the reasoning for that score. All recipes are from Tasty.com. They have all kinds of great recipes perfect for any meal! If you try this at home, make sure that the coffee mugs you use are microwave safe. Bon appétit!

Microwave 5-Minute Mac and Cheese

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of elbow macaroni
  • ½ cup of water
  • 3 tablespoons of milk
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • fresh chives, to garnish, optional

Preparation:

  • Mix the macaroni, water, and salt in a microwaveable mug.
  • Microwave for 2-3 minutes, then stir.
  • Add the milk, cheese, salt, and pepper, then stir.
  • Microwave for another 30 seconds, stir and garnish with a sprinkle of chives.

The Verdict: 3.8/5

This mac and cheese actually tasted really good. The only reason that it did not get a perfect score is that it seems too complicated to make on the regular for a busy college student. Microwave mac and cheese you can buy at the store is definitely quicker and easier to make. If you have a free time during your week, however, definitely give this mac and cheese a try!

Omelet in a Mug

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • ½ bell pepper, diced
  • 2 slices ham, diced
  • ¼ cup of fresh spinach
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste

Preparation:

  • Combine all ingredients in a microwaveable mug.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes, making sure the egg does not bubble over. Stir halfway through the cooking process.

The Verdict: 2.3/5

This was the recipe that I was actually terrified to try. Something about eggs being cooked in a microwave sounds so strange. However, I gathered enough courage to try this omelet recipe. The only ingredient I left out was the ham (vegetarian problems). The eggs were nothing better than okay. They did sort of have that rubbery texture that I was fearful of. I’ll still stick to making eggs in a frying pan (sorry microwave).

Chocolate Chip Muffin Mug

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz of chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup of oat flour
  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 egg white
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract

Preparation:

  • Mix together egg white, honey, and vanilla extract in a greased coffee mug.
  • Add oat flour and baking powder and mix until combined.
  • Add in chocolate chips.
  • Microwave on high for 90 seconds (times may vary).

The Verdict: 4.8/5

I made sure to save this treat until the end in case the first two recipes were a complete disaster. This is the perfect treat for when you are craving something sweet or just need a snack during a Netflix binge.
