Hip Hop Week ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

Sponsered by Siena’s Damietta Cross Cultural Center, read on to find out when and where to catch this year’s Hip Hop Week events! Costin Thampikutty offered to highlight some of the week’s events for us.

Keynote Lecture – Chuck D | Maloney Great Room – Monday, April 4th @ 7:30 pm

Costin: “Considering how racial inequality has become a national conversation in America, we hope Chuck D can provide insight on how Hip-Hop culture serves as a tool for social justice… p.s. We’re also giving out free limited edition t-shirts to the first 100 people with siena IDs.”

518 Day Panel | SSU 240 – Wednesday, April 6th @ 7:00 pm

Costin: “A lot of the time, we forget to support those in our community who are working to improve the quality of life, so we wanted to give a platform to those working with our community. Many people come to Siena and don’t explore the capital region so we’re going to bring the capital region to them.”

Can I Kick It? Shaolin Jazz | Casey’s – Thursday, April 7th @ 9 pm

Costin: “This is probably going to be the weirdest event, but we love thinking outside the box and hopefully people are inspired by the event!”

2nd Annual Open Mic/Spoken Word Competition | Casey’s – Friday, April 8th @ 9:00 pm

Costin: “Last year was our first spoken word competition and it was a success but we’re taking it to the next level. We’ve got more performers and more money to give out! Contact ar06duke@siena.edu if you want to perform!”

Straight Outta Compton Screening | RB 202 –Saturday, April 9th @ 4 pm

Costin: “Hip-Hop culture wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for the pioneers so we wanted to end the week by honoring the artists who paved the way.”

Thanks to Costin for the insights, and check out the flyer below for more details!
