Creating Your Ideal College Morning Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

So much to do and so little…sleep? Motivation? Time? Yeah, I get it. Unfortunately, I am not known to be up at 5 or 6 am to work out, make a smoothie, clean my room and get ahead on homework. After you’ve been up late studying, procrastinating or listening to your noisy building, it can be kind of hard to get up early.

But you can have a great start to your day. Here’s how to construct your ideal college morning routine.

Start the night before. It all starts with your sleep. Make a list of everything that you want to accomplish the next day, so it isn’t keeping you up; it’s on the paper now, not your problem. Also, put your phone and laptop away; stop keeping yourself awake longer. You can pick up an inexpensive noise machine to drown out the noise of your hallmates, if they are keeping you up. You and your sleep come first.

Now, on your list from earlier, break out your highlighter and emphasize all of the items that you want to do in the morning. This can be anything from having a balanced breakfast and taking a shower to going for a relaxing walk and reading a book. Brainstorm your goals and make them a priority.

After you’ve gotten enough sleep, get up right away. Set an alarm on your new iPhone X and put it on the other side of the room. Another thing that I love to do once I wake up is to have a huge glass of water. It always seems to wake me up and make me feel inspired to get out of bed.

Be kind to yourself by not trying to do it all at once. Once you’re out of bed, pick one of the highlighted items on your list and try to get it done. If it doesn’t work out though, you can always try again tomorrow!

It may take some experimenting to figure out what you really want to do in the morning and what works best for you, but you can always change up your morning routine to fit your schedule. College is a stressful time and it’s important to treat yourself to healthy, happy, morning rituals. Have good mornings!
