Despite living on the outskirts of Albany, there is one thing I have noticed about most Siena students’ knowledge of the city: We know the bar scene and that’s just about it.  With the CDTA at our disposal, I find it hard to think how this can be possible. As a lover of cities and exploration, Albany may not seem to offer much but I can attest that it is a hidden gem of sorts.  With warmer weather coming our way, now is the perfect time to get off campus and explore everything Albany has to offer.

1. Admire Albany’s architecture.

Although most of us may have a mental image of Albany looking like a recovering war zone, the city is famous for the beautiful architecture of its state buildings and churches.  It doesn’t take any knowledge about architecture for one to be able to admire the grandeur of the columns and stone faces that can be found all over downtown.  A couple of highlights to check out include the Empire State Plaza, and the entirety of State Street.  Both are intimidating and incredibly beautiful at the same time.  These locations can be easily accessed through the CDTA.

2.  Go museum hopping

It is natural for a city that prides itself on its history to be a full of museums.  Many of these places offer student discounts, so what better way can there be to spend an afternoon?!  Two essential museums to check out are the Albany Institute of History and Art, and the New York State Museum (

4.  Picnic in Washington Park

An oasis of green, Washington Park is the Central Park of Albany.  This park is home to events year round, most notably the Tulip Festival which takes place in May.  Washington Park contains over 100 species of trees, a pond, playgrounds and even a lake house amphitheatre.  I mean you’ll need to bring some food for the day of exploring this park has in store for you!

5. Check out the local music scene

One of the great things about Albany is that it offers everything a major city does with the added bonus of a real sense of community.  The community comes out in crowds towards the summer when the city hosts tons of free outdoor concerts and festivals.  While the semester ends a bit earlier this year, we can still catch MOVE festival and the Tulip festival.  MOVE is a weekend of 100 bands playing throughout the city, while Tulip also hosts artists and celibrates tulips and fine arts!

If this doesn’t make you all want to hop on the 182 southbound, I don’t know what will.
