1.  Meet New People

Once you meet people you are comfortable around, it might seem a bit hard to expand your social circle.  Joining a club or group on campus is the perfect way to counter this feeling.  Meeting people with similar interests guarantees an instant click, and even if they don’t become your BFFs, seeing more familiar faces around campus will make you feel great.

2.  Make Connections

Whether it be through the people you meet or events you attend, networking will be inevitable.  Siena is deeply rooted in the Albany area and getting involved can help you meet professionals, alumni, and even peers that could help you out in the long run.

3.  Find Yourself

As cliché as it sounds, getting involved on campus will help bring out your true strengths and passions.  College is the time to try something out on a whim, and find you absolutely love it.  With the diversity of clubs on campus, you could find yourself a member of the Squash team, Stage III and Physics Club.  Campus life gives you all the opportunities to go out and explore.  Moral of the story: be open to all options, and be willing to try everything once.

4.  Build Your Resume

Future employers like to see that you were as involved as you could have been at school.  Some of the traits these professionals are looking for are organization, sociability and uniqueness; nothing can be as reflective of these traits as the extracurriculars you are involved in.

Want to get involved but don’t know how? Here are a few starting points:

Intramurals:

Sure we might not all be D1 athletes, but intramurals provide a fun alternative for those of us with a competitive side.  Intramurals are a great way to make new friends through practices and teambuilding and a fun way to get your daily workout in without even realizing it.

The Franciscan Center:

A lot of people are unaware of the fact that The Franciscan Center partners with many of the service groups on campus.  The center is a great resource for anyone looking to get involved in giving back to the Siena community and the Albany region.

Academic Clubs:

Academic clubs like the Biology and History clubs allow students to come together and interchange viewpoints on matters relevant to their fields.  This is a great way to make friends within your major, and evidently with people you will have classes with for your Siena career.  This is also a great way to gain broader insights on your studies.
