The day I’ll never forget is June 26th of this year because it was the day I cut my dreadlocks. It was a hot summer day and also happened to be my boyfriend’s 21st birthday. To this day, I regret cutting my locks because my locks were a representation of who I am becoming, a carefree black girl.

I have been ‘natural’ since the summer of 2014; which is not too long to brag about, but for me, it is a huge accomplishment. I was never consistent with anything so having my locks for a year was a big step for me. Before becoming natural, I loved what they call “the creamy crack” also known as a perm because it made my hair straight and easy to maintain – or so I thought. Eventually, I noticed how damaged my hair was from perming and dying my hair excessively. I knew I had to make a drastic change. Being natural is more than just buying natural hair products, co-washing your hair and wearing protective styles, but it is a lifestyle.

This natural hair journey is something every woman of color should experience because it gives us a chance to fully love ourselves, thick hair and all. I am proud to be natural even though it is a process. I am becoming more aware of what my hair needs – which is moisture. By being a YouTube junkie, I have learned that I have 4C hair type; which is known as being very thick and coarse. I became discouraged about my hair texture because I thought I couldn’t be versatile with my hair. It was until I saw other women on YouTube and throughout everyday life proudly rocking the same hair texture as mine, it made me more confident to rock my thick hair.

Over the past year, I have learned myself in the natural aspect and everyday I feel more confident and beautiful. Love the skin you’re in and the hair you have because if you don’t, no one will.

I'm Nicole! Nikki, Nic, anything you want to call me really. I'm from south-eastern Pennsylvania and I love life and beauty. Whenever I'm not writing or taking pictures for my blogs or social media accounts, you can find me (hopefully) at the beach surfing, traveling, making new friends and seeing new places. I'm in love with people I've never met and places I've never been to. I am currently a Senior (!!!) at Shippensburg University, majoring in Communications Journalism (focusing in Public Relations) and minoring in Psychology. I would love to work for a PR firm with advertising, event planning and perhaps a chance to travel. Thanks for reading!! - Nicole
