5 Benefits of Being a College Republican

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ship chapter.

I am a female. I am a junior in college. I attend a state university. I am the product of a single mother. I am a Public Relations major. I am a Republican.

The adjustment of transitioning from a rural, small high school in eastern PA to a fairly large, diverse school in south-central PA has shown me just how different we all are. When I came to Shippensburg, I was fortunate enough to be presented with the opportunity to join a club on campus called the Shippensburg University College Republicans. Since joining this club, I have benefited largely as a person and in my political field.

1. Having the greatest group of conservative friends around.

This one explains itself. Whether we’re holding a meeting, sitting next to each other in class, enjoying each other’s company on the weekend, or grabbing coffee on campus, I’ve never been so glad to have such an amazing group of young conservatives to be around.

2. Networking.

Through campaigning, county dinners, petitioning, and door knocking, I have had the opportunity to meet so many elected officials and important members of the political community.

3. Always having someone who sees your side.

Being a college republican on a liberal campus can be challenging at times. However, being a part of such an amazing group of young conservatives always gives you someone to back you up when political discussion breaks out.

4. Walking side by side with other women.

In the recent heat of politics and social matters, women’s issues have been talked about widely. My experience in college republicans has given me friendship with several other women who respect and want to preserve the standards of the GOP.

5. Opportunities to be involved on campus.

We are fortunate enough to be able to participate in campus-wide days celebrating democracy, political debates hosted by student media groups, and sometimes we even get the chance to be interviewed by the media groups. Overall, being involved on campus helps us greatly. It allows us to expand our network of students and it allows the other students to see exactly what we stand for.
