What Drink to Pair With Your Study Session

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

With the end of midterm season approaching, those last minute study sessions for a few of the later exams are necessary for many students. But with those late nights comes the call for a drink or two to take the edge off. I am not anything close to a scientist, but when it came to alcohol, I was willing to put the time and research into finding out what drinks are the best to pair with your study sessions. Here is what you should be drinking:

1. Gin and Tonic for your Philosophy exam

When furrowing your brow over large, conceptual philosophical ideas late at night before your exam, a drink might be screaming your name. Gin and tonic is your drink in this time of need. Gin is made out of the juniper berry that contains antioxidants to help digestion as well as fight against wrinkles. So go ahead and furrow your brow. Fear not for your future self’s wrinkles. The tonic water adds extra hydration to the beverage, so while alcohol typically dehydrates you, giving you a poor rest while sleeping and a hangover in the morning, the tonic water counteracts these effects. This better night sleep means more time for your mind to digest and remember those philosophical ideas.

2. Beer for your English exam

Some English exams require beer goggles. The alcohol from the beer can give you an added boost of confidence while writing some practice essays and cutting the tentative question of “Where do I start?” out of the equation. In fact, studies show that after one drink of beer, most individuals can answer simple brain puzzles more quickly and creatively than doing so sober. Also, a moderate intake of beer is known to help prevent heart disease in the future, so there would be no further need to use the phrase, “I’m going to have a heart attack,” to express your stress.

3. Jack and Coke for your Math exam

Math study sessions require a lot of practice, which can be very time-consuming. The caffeine from the coke will help boost your alertness in a short amount of time. In fact, after only 40 minutes, the average person has already absorbed the caffeine from a glass of coke. The Jack in Jack and coke gives the added benefits of containing antioxidants, which boost brain wellness, as well as your immune system, while being a lower-calorie hard alcohol option.

4. Wine for your Biology exam

Wine is of course everyone’s best friend for a late night study session, but it actually has been proven to improve memory. Studies have been conducted looking at those who regularly drink wine in comparison to those who do not consume the beverage, giving those involved in the study various different memory quizzes, from which the results found that those who regularly drink wine can complete these quizzes more successfully. A strong memory is vital when it comes to exams that are based around difficult terminology like “heterozygous” and other words that make you want to cry. Wine will keep the tears away.

I hope that these drink pairings will offer some refuge from the heat of a late night study session, and most of all, I wish good luck to those who are still feeling the turmoil of this midterm season as well as all future exam seasons.

But please, study responsibly.
