Giovanni Hosang is a driven and vibrant Computer Science major. He is originally from Jamaica and the president of the SFU SOCA club. Read on to get to know more about Giovanni and how he wants to impact the campus society.

Three words to describe Giovanni?

Passionate. Driven. Fun.

Who is your role model and why?

Someone who face difficulties and hardships and overcome nonetheless. I would have to say, my dad.He always stayed positive regardless and didn’t allow his circumstances to be his defining character. He definitely allowed me to stay true to myself, no matter my circumstances.

You’re the President of the SFU SFU S.O.C.A. Club, what is it about?

SFU S.O.C.A. stands for Students of the Caribbean and African Ancestry, it is a student-led club that stands to promote African and Caribbean intellectual cultural experience through an open and interactive exchange of ideas among members of the university community.

What are some of the goals of SFU Soca for the SFU community?

Well, we try to expose the SFU community to African and Caribbean culture by holding various events such as Symposiums, Cultural Nights, Evenings of Excellence, Galas and our upcoming Pub Night. Pretty much anything to make persons here at SFU studying internationally from the diaspora feel like ‘a home away from home’ as well as sharing that culture with those not apart of the group.

‘Celebrating oneness through diversity’, intriguing mantra. Can you explain that a bit more and how does that gear towards the club’s motive?

The mantra encapsulates what we believe about Unity being our strength even while having diverse backgrounds. So when you share awareness of the various racial, political, cultural and social issues it helps one to see the world through another person’s eyes which helps the overall goal, of Celebrating Oneness. It allows us to share our stories as opposed to being put in a box.

You have so much passion. What is your dream career?

I want to be a Tech entrepreneur that uh.. Honestly I don’t know. -laughs-  I just know I wanna work at Google.

Let’s say we are looking one year from now. The club has had a good year. What does that look like?

Hmm, that’s an amazing question. If I say we had a good year, It would be to see students coming together and learning about different cultures while engaging with each other in a more central area. Engaging with the club’s rich tradition of community building, advocacy and us being a conduit for African and Caribbean cultures on campus. I would really love to see that on campus.

As a ‘yawdie’ like myself, What is your favourite thing about being Jamaican?

Honestly, just the fun and good vibes and the people. As you know, Jamaican people ‘can take bad things mek joke’ (make bad situations into something playful).
