Meet Georgia Riddle-Olsen: Find out what this media savvy student is up to

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

It’s like having the same anxiety all over again. Graduating from university is much like the experience we have from graduating high school. Friends and family are constantly nagging you about what schools you’ve applied to, where you want to go, and if university wasn’t in your future, you were constantly being asked, “what’s next?”

Originally from West Vancouver, it was only natural for Georgia to apply to SFU where ended up majoring in communications and holding a minor in publishing.

What made you want to major in communications?

I guess I wanted to major in communications because it’s very broad and there are a lot of jobs you can get a communications degree. At the time, I was really unsure of what kind of career I wanted so I thought that this major would be a great foundation to pursue whatever I wanted; that really appealed to me.

How did the idea of having a publishing minor come up? Did you have a previous interest?

Actually, a friend of mine suggested taking Publishing 101 with her and I really enjoyed that class. After enjoying that class so much I decided to enroll in more, and before I knew it, I had already done almost half the requirements for a publishing minor. I’ve learned a lot in these classes and thought it would appeal to potential employers.

What has been your favourite class at SFU, thus far?

I think the most memorable class for me is Publishing 101: The Publication of Self in Everyday Life. We got to do a lot of blogging and learned how to create a strong online presence for ourselves. This class helped me discover my interest in print and tied into a lot of my communication classes.

As your time at SFU comes to an end, do you worry about you will do after graduation?

Definitely! I think that any time there is uncertainty we feel more anxious. Although I don’t have an exact plan after graduation, I believe that life always figures itself out so I’m really trying to enjoy the time I have left at SFU, and take time to explore my passions and interests. So far, I plan to stay in Vancouver and work on building strong connections with people in the media. I think that getting experience in the industry such as magazines, radio, and the news will help guide me in what kind of career I will pursue.

Lastly, if you could have any job, what would it be?

This is a tough question. Right now, I would say that I want to be an editor of a lifestyle magazine where I could utilize my knowledge and skills in both my major and minor. I would love to be able to curate content that coincides with my interests like cooking and fashion too.
