Joseph Nomellini: The Feminist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

If you were to ask 21 year old student Joseph Nomellini, he would proudly tell you that he is a feminist. Joseph or Joe is a student at S.F.U. studying in psychology and gender studies. Coming from a very conservative family, issues such as gender rights were not talked about quite often which made it difficult to really grasp what feminism really was. Despite feminism not being a very talked about subject in his home, Joe says he always felt as though women should be treated equal to their male counterparts but never really knew that it belonged to the bigger social construct of feminism. As Joe entered university as a first year, being away from home enabled him to fully understand and learn what feminism actually was. Joe is very much hands on in his community as he is an active member of residence life at S.F.U. as an area coordinator in which he helps and interacts with students everyday. He says that he applies the values that come hand in hand with feminism in all parts of his life including his professional, social and academic life. Joe believes that it’s important for more men to announce their feminist identity in order to help make a difference as well as spread the message that feminism is not only for women equality but for all genders. Feminism has changed immensely from when it was first born and it now takes on a plurality of groups and individuals who want to speak up for gender equality. As society still remains a very much “male-centric” space, Joe believes it is more important than ever for men to speak out and advocate for this cause. I asked Joe what he would say to men who were perhaps to nervous or scared to call themselves feminists in which he replied by saying that feminism is nothing to be ashamed of in fact it should be celebrated. A man who is too ashamed to call himself a feminist needs to be doing some soul searching in that they need to learn what feminism truly means. Feminism is not some social movement for angry women, feminism encompasses all the people who need a voice when it comes fair and equal representation in society, regardless of their gender.
