How I Style Sweaters for the Colder Months

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

It was late to start, but winter is finally upon us! Temperatures are dropping, and no longer can we get away with a thin long sleeve and jacket to get us through the day. Sweater season is now in full force. If you’re anything like me, the colder weather can diminish your outfit creativity. So, I’ve racked my brain (and closet) to help inspire all of us with these comfortable sweater-focused outfits.

Here are five ways I styled sweaters for the colder weather:

Cozy Cardigans

A chunky cardigan is a must have for every girl’s closet – especially for the colder months! They’re comfortable, warm, and easy to throw on top of any outfit. A tip I’ve recently started integrating into my style is matching the buttons of my cardigan (like these brown tortoise ones) with another clothing piece or accessory (I got lucky with these pants – a perfect match). Throw on some sneakers to keep it casual, a t-shirt in case the cardigan proves to be too warm for the indoors, and you’re good to go!

An Oversized Hoodie

If you’re the type who prefers comfort over anything, this oversized hoodie (or any oversized hoodie) is just what you need. Pair it with thick leggings, or trousers and you’ll look comfortable and stylish. Athleisure is still in, so we might as well take advantage of it for as long as possible. Pairing similar tones is an easy way to elevate a relaxed outfit, hence my cream coloured jacket over top.

Large Turtlenecks

Now, I know not everyone loves the feeling of an absurd amount of fabric around their neck, but if you’re one who gets cold easily, turtlenecks are the ideal. Certain styles purposely have a larger neck hole, allowing you to avoid a potential choking hazard, and if the material still feels too constricting, try going a size up. They also act as the perfect face warmer. Is the wind cold on your chin and cheeks? Pull the neck over your face and you’re good to go (just be careful when putting it on with makeup on your face, turtlenecks are not forgiving when it comes to makeup stains).

Turtlenecks are a classic silhouette, and always seem to come back into style in some variation. They’ll go with any bottoms you see fit, whether you prefer sweatpants or jeans. If you’re bored of the basic colours, try updating your turtleneck for a fun patterned one like the one I’m wearing here. (ASOS and H&M always have good and affordable options too!).

Fuzzy Zip-Up

We’ve all seen the Teddy Jackets that have taken the fall season by storm. But if you’re looking for a different take on the new-found wardrobe staple, you should try out this fuzzy zip-up sweater. To bring it back to comfort, this sweater feels like a wearable blanket. It’s the softest, and warmest piece of clothing I currently own. It’s an easy piece to dress up and down, whether you’re feeling the popular athleisure look or you’re throwing it on because you’re running to class. It’s a go-to this season for me.

Cropped Sweaters

It’s ironic that I’ve been talking about the perfect sweaters for the colder weather, yet we’re ending this list off with one that will likely show some midriff. However, paired with high waisted pants and a warm jacket, cropped sweaters can be utilized even in the coldest months. The silhouette helps maintain your shape, and won’t swallow you as an oversized sweater will. Whether you’re into high neck, turtleneck, or crew there are plenty of cropped sweaters to choose from.

Happy styling and stay warm!
