5 things Gilmore Girls Taught Me About Family

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

Whenever I’m asked to recommend a new show to binge on Netflix, I always think of my favourite mother/daughter duo on Gilmore Girls. Not only is Gilmore Girls a ridiculously funny and heartwarmingly sweet TV show, it also teaches many valuable lessons. With BC’s Family Day having just passed, I decided to list everything I have learned about family from the Gilmores.

Friends will come and go, but family will always be there for you

Out of the many relationships that will be made in your life, family is one that you never have to worry about fading away. Through the many boyfriends that both Rory and Lorelai have during the show, they always know that their mother/daughter relationship will always be there for them.

Family knows you best

Growing up includes a lot of personal growth and development – something that your family is a witness to. No matter how much time you spend apart from family, it seems they always know you.

Family can be tough, but they only want the best for you

It is important to remember that your family wants the best for you, so they may freak out if they think you’re making a mistake or need some guidance. It is important in these situations to give them the benefit of the doubt, and remember, they can see your situation from an outside position, and they can be right! Even though Lorelai Gilmore is a cool mom, she does not let Rory get away with everything!

You can’t choose your family, but you can choose to love them

Lorelai and her mother Emily have some difficulty relating to each other throughout the show, but that does not stop them from trying to resolve the relationship. Even when it seems as though you just cannot understand your family, it is important to put aside some differences and love them for who they are.
