5 Christmas Markets to Check Out this Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

Well, exams have officially started, and the stress and panic has finally set in as exam dates inch ever closer. However, everyone needs to take a break once in a while, and there is a whole season of joy and giving right around the corner! How could anyone resist the pull of the holidays, whether exams are coming or not? One of my favorite things to do around this time of year is to take a few hours to enjoy one of the many Christmas markets that Vancouver has to offer!  There are more than ever this year, and here is a list.

1. The Vancouver Christmas Market
When: November 26th to December 24th
Where: The Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza

This one is a staple in Vancouver, and if you haven’t been before, it is the worth the trip downtown. Taking place right up until Christmas, this is the place to buy handcrafted presents, and a variety of snacks from local vendors.  There are different performances going on every day, as well as Vancouver’s only Christmas Carousel.  While it is more expensive than other markets, costing $8 per adult, it is worth the experience!

2. Vancouver Winter Wonderland
When:
December 11th to December 20th
Where: The Pacific National Exhibition

The Vancouver Winter Wonderland market at the PNE is a new market this year, and by the looks of it, it will not be one to miss! The website promises live music, games,  and a variety of vendors, as well as food trucks and tons of activities for kids and adults. The market is touted as being Canada’s largest indoor market, and it will only put you back $5 for the entrance fee!

3. The East Van Holiday Artist Market
When:
December 12th
Where: 1739 East Venables on Commercial Drive

The East Van Holiday Artist Market prides itself as being the perfect place for the last minute shopper, and they mean that. With over 50 local artisans and vendors, you are bound to find something for everyone on your list. They even have a list of vendors on their website, so you can peruse who is going to be there well ahead of time. Best of all, it is free to get in! There is nothing better than free.

4. Coquitlam Farmers’ Market
When: December 12th
Where: The Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex

Coquitlam’s Farmers’ Market operates year-round, but this year they are hosting a special Christmas market! There will be a number of vendors that will carry everything from woodwork, jewelry, ceramics, spices, preserves, as well as gourmet treats and other fun stocking stuffers and gifts. They are also hosting special workshops like a how to make Christmas centerpieces. Admission is free!

5. Shipyards Christmas Market
When: December 18th to 20th
Where: The Shipyards in North Vancouver

The Shipyards Market is back this year, and with over 70 vendors, it is sure to be a good time. On the Saturday, there will be food trucks as well as outdoor vendors, and Santa will be making an appearance on Sunday. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to the North Shore Neighborhood House.
