Ariana’s release of Sweeter this year was an absolute smash, to say the least, with hits like “No Tears Left to Cry” and “God is a Woman” quick reaching number 1 on the charts. After her very public break up with then fiancé Pete Davidson, the world was not ready for the absolute BOP that “thank u, next” would be. In the song not only does she call out her exes, saying what she has learned from each relationship, but she also makes a point saying that above all else, she would love herself and always have her friends and family to rely on.
When the song was released, the cover obviously had some similar visuals to the beloved 2000’s movie Mean Girls,and soon, we were promised a music video that would reference some of the best 2000’s movies including, obviously, Mean Girls, but also Bring it On, 13 Going on 30, and Legally Blonde,with Ariana playing all the main characters. The music video goes through some of the most iconic scenes including the Mean Girls Christmas dance, where Kris Jenner was playing the mom of Regina George, the dancing on the football field scene from Bring it On, the sitting by the pool scene from Legally Blonde, and the shot from 13 Going On 30 where she cries on the front doorsteps with her doll house, where Ariana sported her new short hair. There were also many other cameos from Colleen Ballinger, Jonathan Bennett, Matt Bennett, Courtney Chipolone, Jennifer Coolidge, Gabi DeMartino, Stefanie Drummond, Elizabeth Gillies, Toulouse Grande, Kris Jenner, Alexa Luria, Daniella Monet, Victoria Monet, Scott Nicholson, Tayla Parx, and Troye Sivan.
Ariana has gone through so much stuff this year, and I think it’s great that she is able to pick herself up and be such a strong person. This has become one of my favorite songs recently and I think everyone should go give it a listen and try and say “thank u, next” to all their exes.
