Stressful Things You Don’t Want to Hear When You Are About to Graduate

What are you doing after you graduate?

Well, I hope to go out to dinner with my family that will be coming down from Houston. Oh wait. You mean with my life. I don’t know. I hope someone hires me so I can get a job and start to make money. I mean, start to do what I love.

What kind of job can you get with your degree?

This question really is the cherry on top of all the questions. I can get a job with my degree. What? Because I am not a doctor or a lawyer my existence is insignificant? I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication. This is important— don’t you watch the news? I will be reporting it.

You’re a Radio/TV major . . . So, like, what do you want to do? Radio? Television?

I don’t think any radio and television major knows the answer to this question. I think maybe some of us have our preferences, but really we would choose a job in either of the fields. I know I would take a job at a radio station or a television network. That’s the beauty of my degree— I have options. I plan on trying out different things in the field. I also plan on one day being the editor of a magazine, so you can throw that into the question pot too.

What are you going to do about your loans?

Every time a person brings up loans, I just want to burst into tears. I know some of us are blessed and will be graduating college loan-free— I envy y’all. I definitely will be drowning in some debt, but I don’t have to be reminded of it. Seriously, what kind of question is this? It’s equivalent to asking someone when he or she is going to bury their dead puppy. No one wants to be asked these questions. Stop it.

Have you applied to any jobs yet?

Yes, I started last night. No one has contacted me yet. But I will keep you updated.

Are you going to make any money with your degree?

I sure hope so, because I would prefer not living in a box.

When are you taking your graduation pictures?

This is one of the simpler questions that, yet, still get on your nerves because I don’t know. I am graduating in December, so I need to take them soon. But it’s just so hot outside. I was waiting for the weather to cool down. It’s just Texas.

Are you going to go back home and living with your parents?

I hope to get a job somewhere. If it happens to be back home then I will live with my parents. But I don’t know. I hope by now you have realized the pattern in my answers.

Honestly this list could go on probably forever, so I’m just going to stop here and say . . .

I do not know.

The answer to these questions can change at any moment.

I don’t think anyone who is graduating college knows what they are doing after, because that’s life. I am not a psychic who can predict my future. At this point in time, I am working hard in order to stay on the path to graduation, and when I graduate, I will be happy I have made it this far. It helps that I am the first one in my family to graduate college, so I have already set the bar pretty high.

It is important to remember that most people who are about to graduate already are stressed enough, so don’t ask these questions. I beg of you. Because we most likely don’t know the answers.
