How to Stay Safe While Having Fun in the Sun

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFA chapter.

Summer is quickly approaching and I personally can’t wait to be done with school and have some time to relax. There are so many things that I want to do like go to the beach, maybe attend a festival or even go to a theme park. Over the years I’ve learned that it is always best to take extra precautions when out having fun.

Sunscreen is Your FRIEND!

Always wear, apply and bring extra sunscreen because nothing is going to make a fun situation into hell like getting a sunburn. I’ve had to learn that the hard way. So just by applying before getting in the sun and reapplying every 45 minutes, you will save yourself a whole world of pain in the long run.

Water Your Body!

Stay hydrated! It is so easy to forget to drink water and it is so dangerous when you get dehydrated because you can blackout and land yourself in the hospital. I know here in Texas that it can get to excruciatingly hot temperatures and the sun can be the devil. It can just soak up all your energy and hydration so constantly keep drinking water.

Share Your Location with a Friend

Make sure you tell someone where you are going and when you should be back. Whether you are going to a carnival or camping it would be a good idea to share your location with close friends or family so they can have your back if something does happen.

Bring a Portable Charger

Nowadays our lives revolve around our phones, which means if your phone dies you’re cut off from everyone so invest in a portable charger. There are many different models from ones you plug into charger to solar powered ones and there is a big enough market that you can find a very good one for an affordable price.

Check Your Weather App

When planning out an event you can easily overlook checking the weather. Knowing the weather means you can plan the best time to leave when to have lunch and dinner out or even when to make a stop and take a nap.

Just Have Fun!

Lastly, I’d like to say that while being spontaneous can be fun it is very important to do your research and check out the news before you go somewhere.

I hope that y’all were able to find some of this helpful and remember to always try to be safe.
