There’s really nothing like seeing a very, very real vagina projected on the screen in Blackman Auditorium to wake you up. In yet another wonderful program executed by our very own Women’s Center, YouTube celebrity Laci Green came to Sewanee and delivered a both hilarious and informative talk on how to have the Best Sex Ever. Walking in to Blackman, the entire auditorium was filled with both guys and girls, and as everyone passed around the assorted condom bowls, the atmosphere bubbled with anticipation. And the excitement was well-placed, as Laci Green brought us all that much closer to having the best sex ever in her signature anything-goes style.
The Highlights
Vaginas, Vaginas
According to freshman Jordan Najmabadi, Green’s talk was “…very informative, very interesting. I liked how she just put it all out there, no shame.” Putting it all out there is an understatement; within the first few slides, the audience saw multiple photos of vaginas of all shapes, sizes, and colors. I think this is one of the key aspects of the importance of Green’s talk. She highlighted that all women and all women’s bodies are different, and vaginas are no exclusion. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, there was a great sense of “Love Yourself” throughout the program. Laci Green encouraged everyone to have pride not only in their bodies, but also in the pleasure their bodies can bring.
Penises, Penises
This “Love Yourself” theme continued as Green addressed penises—and as always, pictures were included. Green called out porn for giving both men and women a false sense of what “average” genitals look like and for perpetuating the idea that to be a man is, in Laci’s words, “to have a huge d***.” Green also addressed foreskin and circumcision, which she characterized as a human rights issue.
The Nitty Gritty
After a thorough anatomy lesson that could be aptly called “Fun Genital Facts You’ll Never Learn in a Health Class,” Green went on to address STD’s, which included a demonstration on how to put on a condom and how to cut a make-shift dental dam. (And yes, my entire suite practiced putting on a condom correctly when we got back to the dorm, because as we all know, practice makes perfect.) However, Green ended on her most powerful note when she discussed consent. In an incredible comment to which the audience responded with a booming applause, Green said, “If someone is sleeping or passed out, DON’T F****** TOUCH THEM.” This advice is something that seems so obvious, but is such a prevalent issue in the college campus party scene, and Laci Green verbalized it perfectly.
Laci Green, a sex education activist whose personal interests on Facebook are listed as “sexuality, relationships, body image, gender, [and] feminism” showed Sewanee The Best Sex Ever on Wednesday night, and she pushed us to be proud of our bodies and our sexuality. So let’s take her advice and love ourselves, love our partners, and love our partners’ consent—let’s have the Best Sex Ever. YSR.
