Yik Yak: What is it?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Seattle U chapter.

“Spread the word, grow the herd”– Yik Yak

Quite simply, Yik Yak is an anonymous twitter feed that collects posts in a particular location. Most of these locations are on college campuses and the app will direct you to certain campuses like Penn State or the abundant UC locations.

Posting on Yik Yak is easy. Think of something funny, steal something from Tumblr or Twitter, or make a personal complaint. Others will “up-vote” or “down-vote” the post which indicates whether your post is well-liked or not. Offensive material is generally taken down if “down-voted” enough.

Seattle University students participate in this app actively. When the Bellarmine elevator was broke during the start of the quarter, you better believe people had something to say about it. Yik Yak is successful for app users because of the reliability of the posts and connection of the student body.

Top Six SU Yik Yak Posts:

1. “Parents weekend means all of the landfill gets mixed in with the compost at C Street.” (39 up-votes)

2. “I pet a dog today. So that’s exciting.” (45 up-votes)

3. “Send some thoughts and prayers for the victims of the shooting in Marysville today. Be thankful we go to a school with a very supportive community.” (53 up-votes and major props to the anonymous sweetheart!)

4. “Freshman: ‘I’m gonna graduate with honors and sh*t.’ Junior: ‘I’m gonna graduate.’ Senior: ‘Sh*t.’” (56 up-votes)

5. “High school: ‘F*ck, I got a 70’ College: ‘F*uck yeah! I got a 70!’” (76 up-votes)

6. “Fruit fly, I will defeat you, even if it takes all night.”

I'm Skyler. I go to Seattle University in hopes of earning a degree in Creative Writing. I love to discuss and write about LGBTQ politics, fashion, and I spend way too much time scrolling through Tumblr.
