On Thursday, April 22nd, 2016, the world known legend Prince died at age 57. While celebrities and artists dying isn’t something unusual, there’s something specifically painful about the passing of Prince, much like how many felt about David Bowie’s passing. Prince was not only a musician, but an icon. He pushed boundaries and produced excellence with everything he did.

His music, his fashion, his attitude, and his entire persona pushed the boundaries of social convictions and gender conformity way before our time. Prince was arguably one of the most important people when it came to questioning the norms our society has pushed on us, and his comfortability with his sexuality and overall confidence within himself inspired and influenced so much of what pop culture is today. His influence has completely shaped what we know today, which is possibly why his passing stings us as hard as it does. Prince’s impact deserves to be recognized and honored. So with that being said, here are some of Prince’s most iconic moments in fashion throughout the years, which defied gender norms and shaped current merging of pop culture and fashion.
