Girl Scout Cookies: A Definitive Ranking

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Seattle U chapter.

Spring is coming, the flowers are blooming, swimsuit season is approaching, and the sweet faces of Girl Scouts are waiting outside the grocery stores, flanked by the tempting, colorful boxes of delicious baked goods.

Girl Scout cookies go way back, circa 1922, but today, what’s ranking highest on the list? We’ve got the top five laid out for you.

1. Thin Mint.

2. Samosas or Caramel Delights

3. Tagalongs or Peanut Butter Patties

4. Do-Si-Dos or Peanut Butter Sandwiches

5. Trefoils or Shortbread

These original cookies sold for a whopping 35 cents per dozen. Don’t feel like spending $5.00 on a box? Here’s a recipe:

1 cup butter

1 cup sugar

additional sugar for topping (optional)

2 eggs

2 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

Cream butter and the cup of sugar; add well-beaten eggs, then milk, vanilla, flour, salt, and baking powder. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Roll dough, cut into trefoil shapes, and sprinkle sugar on top, if desired.

Bake in a quick oven (375°) for approximately 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Makes six- to seven-dozen cookies.

And for those of you with health or dietary concerns, don’t worry, you can still indulge: Thanks- A-Lots, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, and Lemonades are vegan and all of the cookies are Kosher. And the Girl Scouts are introducing a new cookie this year for the ever-growing population going gluten free: Trios.
