As far as parties go, it’s pretty common knowledge that theme parties are the best kind of party. Everybody loves an excuse to dress up (whether in a costume or in formal attire) and partake in activities uncommon in the average house party. Not to mention the pictures you can take at a theme party are endless and often amazing! With the holiday season upon us, it’s time to start thinking about which theme you’re going to use for your holiday party.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Ugly holiday sweater party

We say “holiday sweater” because believe it or not, there are actually some pretty bad non-Christmas affiliated sweaters that can be rocked just as well. Some fun activities for an ugly holiday sweater party include voting on the best sweater or even a craft table to make your own ugly sweater.

White Elephant gift exchange party

The rules can be as simple or as complicated as you want them to be! A common way to do a white elephant gift exchange is to have everyone pick a number out of a hat and pick a present in that order. Once a gift has been unwrapped, it can be stolen by anyone without a gift. This goes on until the last gift is opened and the game is over! Set a price limit (the lower the price, the funnier the gifts) or have the gift be uniform, like jewelry or underwear.

Harry Potter marathon party

ABC Family knows where the party’s at: Hogwarts. Every holiday is an excuse for the network to have a Harry Potter movie marathon, which can last the entire weekend! Correspond your party with one of these ABC Family marathons or play all the movies (or as many as you can get through) on your own to avoid commercial interruptions. Encourage guests to dress up by sending their invite in the form of a Hogwarts letter!

Mocktail party

Driving during the holiday season can get very dangerous very quickly. Though drunk driving is never acceptable, take an extra step to discourage this and host a sober mocktail party! Dress up in old prom dresses or swanky formalwear and have fun creating crazy drinks with juice and soda. Everyone will be glad when they get home safely and don’t wake up with a hangover the next morning!
