As a freshman, the move from home to the dorms was one of the biggest changes I’d ever experienced. Now, as we head into our second semester, we’ve all begun to realize that it’s time to start it all over again.

That’s right, ladies. Even though second semester has just started back up, it’s already time to think about next year’s living arrangements. As you may have noticed, San Diego State’s got quite a few students, and while there are loads of affordable housing in the area, it’s filling up pretty fast. The time to start thinking about where you’ll live and what your situation will be come next year is now, and I’m here to give you a few pointers on how to do that.

For those of you living at home, talk to your parents (or whoever you’re planning on living with). See what arrangements can be made, or if there will be any changes to rules, restrictions, or practices. Do you need to get a job? Will you have access to a car? Living at home can offer plenty of freedom while still enabling you to maintain strong ties to your family.

For those who plan on living in the dorms next year, start looking at them now. There are plenty of available housing options, from the Living Learning Centers at Maya and Olmeca to the tall, less central buildings of Chappy and UT, to the suites at Cuic. If you know people in some of the other dorms, see if they’ll let you check their space to determine how you like it. If not, SDSU’s website offers virtual tours of most of the rooms. See your options before you make your decision, remember to  think about location, space, and what just seems to suit you best, as well as what you can afford.

Lastly, for those of you looking for apartments in the area,  make sure to thoroughly do your research so that you know all of your options. Unlike the dorms, it’s easy to wind up in a place that you just can’t find livable. And there’s a lease agreement, which can be a little bit scary and intimidating to those of us who are very new to the idea of being on our own. If you’re going to be living in a place for the next year and signing a binding contract, you’ve got to make sure you’re completely knowledgeable about it. Take tours of various apartments in the area, look online for reviews, take friends, find roommates, and ask questions. That last one is key. Whether taking a tour, calling on the phone, or simply emailing the office, asking questions is essential. Figuring out the different bills you’ll be paying (not all apartments’ rents will include utilities), what all is included with the rent price, and- here’s a big one- what measures the apartments take to ensure the safety of the residents, are all things that will both help you when it comes to making a decision and when it comes to convincing your parents that you’re ready for the move.

Whatever you choose to do for next year, start looking into it now. Know that there are plenty of options for you out there, but also know that there are many others who are looking at those same options. Get a head start and do some research, talk to your friends and family, and, if you’re ready, make that first down payment that will brand you as one who’s officially entered the adult world.
