7 Must-Watch Horror Movies For This Spooky Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SDSU chapter.

Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to get in the Halloween mood than to watch scary movies?! If you’re looking for some films to watch that will not just scare you, but genuinely disturb you, check out these (if you dare…):

  1. HEREDITARY (2018)

You’ve probably heard of Hereditary already, and for good reason. This movie left me genuinely unsettled even days after I watched it.

In the film, after their grandmother passes away, a family slowly discovers dark truths about her private life and their family history. Toni Collette, the actress that plays the mother “Annie” in the film, delivers an amazing performance that at times seems too convincing to not be real…

  1. THE LIGHTHOUSE (2019)

This film takes cabin fever to a whole new level.

Set in the 1890s, two lighthouse watchers (portrayed by Robert Pattinson and Willem Defore) trapped on a small New England island slowly lose their sanity as they get beaten down by the harsh elements with only each other as company.

  1. IT FOLLOWS (2014)

The more I think about it, the more horrifying and anxiety-inducing the concept of this film becomes.

Jay is a young teenage girl who contracts a sexually-transmitted curse one night after sleeping with her new boyfriend. Her symptoms? A deadly being that looks just like an ordinary human who follows her everywhere, slowly walking toward her. If she lets it get too close, she dies immediately. Jay is able to pass on the curse if she sleeps with someone else, but if they die? The being will simply come back and start following her again.

  1. THE BABADOOK (2014)

Okay, I love horror movies. And this is one of the ones that I still think about from time to time because it freaked me out so much the first time I watched it.

The plot of the film consists of a single mother still recovering from the death of her husband who notices her child acting strangely after bringing home a disturbing children’s book about a monster. Let’s just say that this movie reaffirmed my decision of never having kids.

  1. RAW (2016)

Spoiler alert: Don’t eat anything before you watch this movie.

Justine, a new college student who has been a strict vegetarian her entire life, eats meat for the first time while exploring the underground night life of her university and learning more about herself. However, the horrifying side effects she experiences afterwards teach her more about herself than she bargained for.

  1. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999)

What was my takeaway from watching this movie? Never go camping with friends.

This found-footage style movie follows a group of friends who go camping in an effort to make a documentary about the local Blair Witch legend. Though the trip starts out fun and innocent, the friends quickly find out that there’s more to the legend of the witch than what they originally thought.

  1. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991)

Although this movie is more of a dark crime thriller, it’s iconic for a reason and will be forever one of my favorites.

Clarice Starling is a top student at the FBI’s training academy and is asked to work on a case involving a high-profile serial killer referred to as “Buffalo Bill.” In an attempt to discover the identity of the killer, Clarice is ordered to communicate with another serial killer, Hannibal Lector. However, as Clarice quickly finds out, Hannibal is a highly intelligent sociopath who finds it both easy and enjoyable to get inside people’s heads.

Emily is a second-year student studying Integrated Marketing Communications at San Diego State University. In her free time, she loves to watch films, hike, and cook.
