5 Modest Mouse Lyrics That Will Make You Feel Less Lonely

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCSU chapter.

Music is proof that there is a special kind of magic in us. Apart from drowning out the noises of the world, it has a way of reading our minds, vocalizing emotions too complex to append words to, and even influencing our mood. Life is hard enough with music. Now imagine life without music. No, no. The thought is too evil to entertain.

Music is another way of saying, “You’re not alone in this. I can imagine what you’re feeling.” Sometimes when emotions clutch us tight, we pull out our phones, open Spotify, and lose ourselves in our favorite songs, a cocoon protecting us from the world, a hope of finding catharsis.

If you’re displeased with the current affairs of our world, or are even dealing with the all-too-common bitterness of loneliness, I suggest a heavy dose of Modest Mouse, administered by headphones nightly. Vocalist Isaac Brock is a particularly gifted lyricist whose wit and insight have helped him to create some of the most enigmatic lyrics I have come across, often condemning the human race and bemoaning loneliness. Below are 5 Modest Mouse lyrics that are as timeless as they are universal:

Don’t be scared. I know the lyrics are gruesome, but let me explain Isaac Brock’s madness. Though the first image that may come to mind is a blood transfusion, the lyrics are meant to be a little more figurative than that (aren’t they always?). Here, blood can be substituted for feelings and you’ll have a better understanding of the song. We all want to feel loved and understood, and so we’re always on the lookout for the one person who will be privy to our innermost thoughts and feelings. We want to inject a part of ourselves into others, make them one with us in hopes of building greater intimacy.

On Loneliness

Loneliness is a popular theme in Modest Mouse songs.  Even in the midst of an ocean of people, it is not uncommon to feel “lonesome.” If there are 7 billion people in the world, why are we so lonely? It may surprise us to learn that sometimes our own company will more than suffice–it’s really all we need.

On Optimism

“Float On,” Good News For People Who Love Bad News (2004)

Even good things can come out of a bad day. Always try to identify the good in the bad, even when it feels as if the universe is out to get you.

On Love

“You’re the Good Things,” Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks (2001)

Though you have one too many flaws, and are far from the ideal partner (who, if you’re wondering, is a romantic construct), I still love you.

On Wanderlust

We are born restless, with an urge to travel and look for ourselves in far-flung places. “All this scrambling around” means it is time to pack up your bags and satiate your wanderlust. Eventually, your journey will lead you to yourself.
