Do you find yourself getting tired of dining hall food? Do you go to the P.O.D to grab something, because you don’t like anything on third floor DeNaples… AGAIN? Are you craving mom’s home cooked meal? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should stop by these local restaurants.
Even though nothing is quite like food from home, these places won’t disappoint.
1. Downtown Deli: 300 Spruce St., Scranton, PA
Downtown deli is not only a great place to eat on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but it is also great for when you’re craving delicious deli sandwich. Aside from having amazing breakfast, (my weekend order is usually a breakfast Panini with eggs, cheese, tomato and avocado), Downtown Deli offers a wide variety of food from soups and salads to sandwiches. If you haven’t tried Downtown yet, I would highly recommend going ASAP.
2. Backyard Ale House: 523 Linden St., Scranton, PA
Backyard Ale House is a little gem in the center of Scranton’s town square. They have great food and you can enjoy eating on their adorable outdoor patio. My favorite meal at Backyard is simple – a burger with fries on the side, couldn’t be better! I definitely recommend Backyard, especially now that it’s spring so you can soak up the sun dining outdoors.
3. Sacco’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant: 208 Meadow Ave., Scranton, PA
In the mood to eat Italian food but New York City is too far away? Sacco’s is a great alternative without putting a hole in your wallet. Order a pasta dish and get a soup or salad, plus garlic knots included! What’s even better about Sacco’s is that it’s BYOB.
4. Ale Mary’s at the Bittenbender: 126 Franklin Ave., Scranton, PA
Relatively new to Scranton, Ale Mary’s is a great place to get awesome appetizers, like the yummy fried mac and cheese bites. If you haven’t been here yet, throw it on top of your list for a place to eat out next.
5. Osaka: 244 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA
Right around the corner from Backyard Ale House is where you’ll find the next restaurant on this list. If you are in the mood for sushi or Japanese food, including hibachi, Osaka is the way to go. Although it is more expensive, it’s a great place to celebrate a birthday or treat yourself. The fun atmosphere will leave you happy, full and smelling like food for hours (I’ll let you decide if that’s a good thing).
Here are a few other places that I have yet to try, but have heard great things about:
Savory Maza: 200 North Main Ave., Scranton, PA
Tequila: 320 Penn Ave., Scranton, PA
Posh: 401 Jefferson Ave., Scranton, PA
JJ McNallys: 501 Linden St., Scranton, PA
Vine Cafe: 431 Lackawanna Ave., Scranton, PA
These places are all within walking distance from campus, no car needed! All you need are some friends, your wallet, and an empty stomach! Now that the weather will hopefully be getting warmer soon, it’s a great opportunity to go explore the many different dining options Scranton has to offer.
