Stay Downtown, Get Off Campus: The Best Places to Go

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

It’s about that time of the semester- you’ve tried every combination of burrito from Zoca, you own six Scranton noodies, and the Starbucks’ employees know your “usual.”  While there’s always tons to do on campus, sometimes it’s nice to just get away for a bit.  Luckily, we’re right in the midst of Downtown Scranton, where just a few short blocks can keep you busy for days.  Check out these fabulous places and you’re sure to be a regular in no time!  (And it’s never to early to start Christmas shopping…..)

1. Lavish Body & Home
600 Linden Street
Lavish is the epitome of every college girl’s dream.  They offer full salon service with some of the area’s most sought after hairdressers.  Need a quick mani or wax?  Done!  In addition to the salon, the front is a store packed with luxurious body care, makeup, home décor, and accessories.  Between their homemade soaps and Serendipity perfume, you won’t even mind showering in the community bathroom!  They carry brands unlike anything else around here such as Barr-Co and Barefoot Dreams, making just about everything a unique gift.  Check out their website for salon prices and a preview of their amazing merchandise!  BONUS- They accept Royal Cards (thank you Mom and Dad!)

2. JJ McNally’s
501 Linden Street
JJ McNally’s might just rival 3rd floor DeNaples for the best brunch menu.  Their motto is Fast, Fresh, Local and they don’t disappoint.  McNally’s has lots of delicious fresh options for vegans and vegetarians- but if you’re looking for something a little more indulgent, the grilled cheese is to-die-for!  Every day they have different breakfast and lunch specials that the chefs carefully revolve around the week’s best local produce. Having a club party or fundraiser?  Check out their new catering menu!  BONUS x2- The chocolate chip cookies at the register will be the best $1 you’ve ever spent.  10% discount to University students!

3. Northern Light Espresso Bar & Café
536 Spruce Street
Bring your books to Northern Light and settle into the most comfortable and delicious café near campus.  There are couches, tables, and stools to choose from in this 2-story oasis.  Here, you can order just about every drink imaginable.  From the blended chai to the fresh espresso, you are sure to find something to suit your study needs.  If you’re not studying, you can grab a massive cookie and play one of their board games with your friends.  While you’re enjoying the relaxation of Northern Light, make sure to check out their walls, which are covered with artwork by local artists.  BONUS- Free Wifi!!

4. Note Fragrances
401 Spruce Street
Note Fragrances is an experience like no other.  At this custom perfume studio, you can create your own fragrance from mixing a variety of scents.  Your concoction is then bottled up and you leave smelling just as unique as you desire.  They will even save your formula in the system for when you run out!  In addition to the custom studio, they also offer their own delicious pre-made perfumes, candles, and body care.  If you’re looking for something fun to do with your friends, you can drop in or choose to host a private party for a special occasion.  BONUS- Check out their website for free samples and complimentary shipping over $75!

5. Steamtown Hot Yoga
121 North Washington Avenue
With finals just around the corner (yikes), you will definitely need to relieve your stress in the next couple weeks.  As the weather continues to get colder (again, yikes), there is no better place to spend an hour than at Steamtown Hot Yoga!  Their Feng Shui studio is completely green and eco-friendly and the staff is just as nice.  During the session, your body will be detoxified and your mind will be cleared.  Yoga is the perfect alternative when you’re just not feeling the gym!  BONUS- There’s usually discounts for University and new students- just ask!!

6. New Laundry
127 North Washington Avenue
Nothing to wear this weekend?? Head to New Laundry!  The store is filled with racks of new styles from Vineyard Vines (I <3 Scranton shirts!), Vince, Hunter Bell, and many more.  Along with clothes, New Laundry carries tons of jewelry and accessories.  If you’re looking for something personal, they have a large selection of monogrammed items ranging from a wallet to a necklace.  Most recently added to their selection are the preppy sought-after Daniel Wellington watches!  BONUS- YES, they have the infamous BLANKET SCARF!
