Earth Day, Every Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

I love scrolling through social media on Earth Day, looking at photos from friends’ vacations, beautiful sunsets, and once in a while just a random picture of someone with the caption “Happy Earth Day!”. Yet, what a lot of those people don’t realize is that in the last decade the world has seen its hottest temperatures in over 125,000 years. And if this trend continues, the only Earth Day pictures you will see in the future is of mudslides, wildfires, and animals who have gone extinct. That is why the issue of climate change is so important! Although it is not our job stop big corporations from burning fossil fuels, we can still make simple changes in our everyday lives. Turning the lights off when you leave a room or turning the heat off when you leave your house can be beneficial. Or there is the most common cause of fossil fuel burning, motor vehicles. I know, I know you can’t walk/bike everywhere and don’t get me started about the snow, but on a nice spring or summer day definitely consider other means of transportation. I am no perfect human being; however, I do what I can to make a difference. We are going to be on this planet for a while, so let’s do what we can to better our home and our future.
