Adulting 101: How to be more of a morning person

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

So I’ve always been kind of a morning person, I also go to bed really late – that’s a whole other issue, but not really the point. In college it’s not easy to be a morning person- studying, assignments going out, and hanging out with friends. However, studies have shown that over half of Americans feel at their “personal best” between 5a.m. and noon. Now I’m not saying get up at 5a.m., but most people feel their best and most productive during those hours.  This year I have made it a point to get up at 6a.m. most mornings, and go to the gym and drink my coffee to start my day on a productive notes. This lets me feel more productive. If you want to be more productive and try to be more of a morning person, here are some tips:

Set fewer alarms, and keep your phone father away from you

Okay, hear me out. This might seem extremely extra, but it’s super helpful if you tend to sleep through your alarm. I used to set so many alarms. First of all, if you set fewer alarms and you know you have to get up, you won’t hit snooze. A lot of alarms enables you to hit snooze. Also, putting your phone on your window sill or dresser will cause you to get up to turn it off. This will make sure you wake up, and don’t roll over and hit snooze.

Open the blinds, and the window!

This will let the sunlight hit your face, and will let you know it’s morning. The fresh air will help wake you up. This puts you in a better mindset to start the day.

Make your bed!

Again, this seems tedious, and obvious. If you’re in the habit of not doing this it will take a week to get used to. If you don’t do this first thing in the morning, I recommend you start. It’s going to be extra at first, but it will become a habit. This keeps you from crawling back into bed and going back to sleep.

Have a little morning routine

Whether it’s going to the gym, drinking coffee, or going to your local bagel store. Having some type of morning routine gives you something to look forward too! This will make it worth it to get up earlier.

Do stretching or some type of workout!

Whether it’s stretching, walking, going to the gym or going for a run – doing exercise in the morning will allow your body to wake up and just make you feel more alive.

Plan things out the night before!

Whether it’s picking your outfit, packing up your bag, or meal prepping – this will optimize your morning and have everything ready to go for you when you wake up!

Now waking up earlier is a habit, and habits take time to develop. These things might seem tedious, but doing them and waking up even 10-15 minutes earlier everyday which will allow you to become more over a morning person!
