A Day in the Life of doing Theater at the University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

I knew the second I would get to college I wanted an engaging extracurricular theater program where I could make friends and focus on my academics as an English student. At the University of Scranton, we have multiple opportunities to participate in theater, especially with our two major groups The Players and LIVA Arts. I am a part of one of LIVA Arts Company, which is a student-run organization. This fall we put on Rent and all of us were super excited to perform. Not all of us are theater majors, so it is nice to sit back from our studies and focus on the show. This is usually a day of my life when we have our weekend rehearsals…

8:00 am – I woke up after a long night, I was so super tired and was ready to go back to bed. Yet I then was scrolling on Instagram and Snapchat checking my messages. This is one habit I have really gotten into with my morning routine.

8:30 am – I got out of bed and started on a little bit of reading for one of my classes. I usually end up doing my work after rehearsal, but I was trying to be productive with my day. I ended up doing some reading for my two American literature classes.

10:30am – Then I started to get dressed in my costume because for LIVA we do our own pictures for our posters. We usually like to take a Sunday to do this, and the posters end up always looking good. I grabbed my curling wand, my makeup, and a quick granola bar and ended up walking to LIVA house, are off-campus rehearsal space where we practice.

11-1:30 pm-I ended up doing my hair and makeup while helping some of the other girls. Then we did a bunch of solo shots and group shots to add it into the poster. It is honestly super fun at every show to do this, getting in our costumes and taking photos. It is honestly super great getting into character and talking to my other cast members.

1:30-2:30 pm-We ended up getting an hour lunch break, so I ran and dropped some of my stuff off at the dorm. A couple of friends were getting Chipotle and promised to bring something back. I ran back up to LIVA house so I could quickly have food before we had a quick blocking rehearsal.

2:30-4:00 pm-We ended up going back to block out the finale for the show. It was a little bit of a slow rehearsal. A bunch of the ensemble members and I ended up doing homework while they were working with the principals. Yet we were able to get on and learn what we are supposed to do. It is so crazy because now we learned the entirety of the show and now, we got to go over everything before we perform on the opening night of the show.

5:00pm- After dropping my stuff off from rehearsal, I grabbed some dinner and started on some more work. I finished the reading I was doing in the morning for my American Lit classes. Then I officially started on my laundry since I like to get it done during the beginning of the week.

7:00pm- My laundry is officially done and put away, which I am so happy about. I then end up working on catching up with some reading stuff for ethics. With classes and the show, it is a little bit hard to manage but I end up doing what I can. I want to make sure that I am dedicating my time to it because that is what is important.

11:30 pm- I went to bed and chilled out a bit doing some late-night reading on my phone…I usually like reading an e-book for bed. Then I turn the lights off and go to sleep.
