My first Savannah Film Festival was an experience I will never forget. The crowds, the stars, the smell of fresh popcorn and of course the incredible movies premiered are now permanently engrained in mind. However, one movie made an impression- “Loving.” “Loving” is the touching true story of an interracial couple fighting for the right to remain married in Virginia in 1958. A real life version of the idea that love prevails all. Now don’t get me wrong, the story was definitely heart wrenching and there was not a dry eye in the room yet, as a fashion marketing major I couldn’t help but look at-you guessed it- the clothes. The flouncy skirts, the perfectly pinned hair, the red lips, the fashion was beautiful. However the more and more I looked the more it got me thinking of just how much the 1950’s style has influenced our clothing today. Yes I know, the 1950’s has a very distinct style that isn’t necessarily prominent in an obvious manner as street wear but think about it there are so many ways in which we have incorporated the past into the present.

1. High-waisted trousers

The 1950’s was the era of the high-waisted bottoms, I mean they not only make your butt and waist look amazing but also, you never ever have to worry about showing off your  plumbers crack when you want to sit down. The 50’s women knew what they were doing and apparently so do we, as I guarantee that everywhere you look you will see someone wearing a high-waisted piece of clothing.

2. The Cat Eye Sunglasses

Granted we have adapted the trend a little bit, opting for oversized sunglasses with a slightly rounded shape but nonetheless we definitely rock cat eye sunglasses in today’s day and age and back in the 50’s they did too! Something about cat eye sunglasses is not only feminine but also a little sassy.

3. The oversized coat

The oversized coat is a staple in any fashionistas wardrobe this season- but we aren’t exactly being original, we sort of all stole the idea from the women of the 50’s. Although todays styles are a little more masculine and we tend not to wear matching hats with our coats the principal is the same.

4. The Midi Skirt- Voluminous or Pencil!

I don’t know about you but when I think of the 50’s style midi skirts are definitely the first things that come to mind.  They are traditionally classy, elegant and feminine but in today’s day and age we also make them a little edgy by adding some casual pieces for a more everyday look.

5. Co-ords

The 50’s women were the queens of the co-ords. Everything had to match from head to toe and we’ve embraced the same idea today. I mean it’s an outfit made easy. Although todays looks are a little more revealing and tend to have less of a structured feel to them the idea still applies.

So the next time you put on your favorite pair of high-waisted jeans or oversized coat remember you owe it all to the women of the 50’s!
