As the weather dials down it may signal our instincts that it is time to stay inside watching a lot of Netflix and drinking hot chocolate. Though no one is taking that away from you, here are some fun things to do that will make you enjoy autumn even more. Whether on campus or nearby these (mostly) free events will have you putting on a sweater and heading out soon.

1. SCAD FASH Film series.

Check out some iconic movies memorable for their major fashion statements like Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan in 1974’s “Great Gatsby” and Bette Davis in “All About Eve.” The films are also accompanied by a SCAD professor-led discussion about them. Admission is free for SCAD students, faculty, and staff. “The Great Gatsby” (1974) will be shown Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. and “All About Eve” (1950) on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.

2. Holiday in Lights at Centennial Olympic Park.

If Piedmont Park is the heart of Midtown then Centennial Olympic Park is the heart of downtown. Resurrected after the 1996 Summer Olympic Games held in Atlanta, Centennial Olympic Park offers beautiful fountains, sweeping lawns and a ferris wheel year-round. Just a few miles south from campus but easily accessible through MARTA public transportation, this park is going to look magical with its free-for-the-public winter wonderland-themed light display starting on Nov. 21. Also make sure to check out Centennial’s annual ice rink from Nov. 21-Jan 10. The cost is only $12 for a 90-minute session and includes ice skate rentals.

3. Art on the Atlanta Beltline.

Modeled after The High Line in New York City, the Atlanta Beltline is a 33 mile-long trail that links 45 in-town neighorhoods of Atlanta. Get some exercise or just enjoy the remarkable view by walking through the veins of Atlanta through this free trail. The Atlanta Beltline presents rotating installments of local artists’ photography and sculpture for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy. Also, be sure to check out some of  the quirky boutiques and stores along the way such as Paris on Ponce, Krogg Street Market and Ponce City Market.

4. Ladies/Student Nights at Whole World Improv Theatre.

Located right on Spring Street and very close to campus is the Whole World Improv Theatre. Get a group of girlfriends together for a nice (and hilarious!) way to celebrate the start of SCAD weekends. Every Thursday night until the end of the year ladies get in free between 7-7:30 p.m. and a valid student ID gets anyone in for $5 afterwards.

5. College Night @ the High Museum of Art.

An annual event at the High where students get in for $5 and enjoy a night of live music, a scavenger hunt, and other activities while also having all the current exhibits open for viewing. Save the date for Friday, Nov. 13 from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and don’t forget your student ID!

So grab a friend, family member or significant other and enjoy autumn Atlanta-style.
