All of the Looks You’ve Got to See from the 2016 Met Gala

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD chapter.

As you already know, May 2nd was this year’s Met Gala. The theme of the night was “Manus X Machina: Fashion in the age of technology.” This is the perfect theme due to the overwhelming effect that technology has on the world today. Textiles and fabrics have never been more versatile and technology driven, so this theme is perfect! At this year’s gala I had high expectations for celebrity stylists to completely transform their muses given this theme, but, they did exactly the opposite. I noticed many of the stars wore looks that didn’t correlate with this year’s theme. While I can understand wanting to pass on restricting details, hard textiles, and itchy sequins, one night of discomfort for the sake of fashion and glamour would have certainly been a more memorable night for such an amazing theme. I Guess we’ll let you be the judge of this year’s It-Gals at the gala. Here are all of the looks you’ve got to see from the 2016 Met Gala.

1st up, THE STAND OUT MOMENTS

Emma Watson’s dress-over-pants ensemble has got to be one of my favorite 2016 Met Gala moments. Initially, I was confused because it didn’t seem to me that this look was suggestive of technology at all. However, after research I learned that this look was made with recycled plastic bottles, which is the subtlest way to abide by the theme. The subtlest way we’ve seen on the carpet all night.

Completely opposite of Emma, wearing one of the most literal interpretations of this theme, is Poppy Delevingne in this all-metallic-everything Marchesa gown. This gown, with its silver beaded fringe, as well as studded bodice and accessories couldn’t go unnoticed and certainly set the tone for the night’s theme.

One thing I can’t do is talk about 2016 Met Gala favorites without mentioning Claire Danes! She stayed true to the technology theme this year with a dress that dazzled on the red carpet as well as lit up a dark room with LED lights incorporated into her gown. Wearing a Zac Posen dress fit for a princess, even Cinderella would be in envy.

Irina Shayk stated her presence at the gala by wearing this stars & stripes Givenchy gown. Although like most looks, it wasn’t truly dedicated to the theme, it still was absolutely gorgeous. The romantic combination of the hugging corset detail and flowing fabric of the gown is really what makes this one of my favorites of the night.

Lastly is one of the most versatile women in fashion right now! Zendaya looks mature and regal in this bronze Michael Kors dress. Her hair and makeup are perfect styling for the gown and her face.

2nd up THE COOL GIRLS

Taylor Swift went grunge in a metallic mini-dress with knee-high cutout sandals. This Louis Vuitton dress and deep purple pout has earned her the well-deserved Bad Girl Award.

Also wearing a Louis Vuitton mini dress, is Alicia Vikander. She must receive the It Girl Award for this quirky look. This ensemble is so youthful and fun with the addition of the patent leather bustier and variety of textiles.

In Valentino. Lorde went for innocence & girly in this floor length pastel tulle gown. This dress, which is irregular for Lorde, has us thinking she and Taylor Swift are taking a few tips from one another’s style. This look lands her the Sweet Heat Girl award!

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a pair of trousers in a sea of dresses. These Thakoon sequin separates land Alexa Chung The Boss Award. Don’t you too with you owned this power suit?

3rd up THOSE WHO MISSED THE MARK

Chloe Grace Moretz almost hit the mark with this Coach gown, all she needed was for the hemline to be a little shorter and maybe a different hairstyle. Tailoring is everything when approaching the red carpet & her gown was a little too long.

It seems to me that Lady Gaga attempted to take us back to the 80’s with this look. Considering the epic red carpet moments, we’ve seen from Gaga in the past, I had high expectations for the technology theme on the pop princess. This custom Versace body suit paired with fishnet stockings and major platform heels didn’t give me Manus x Machina glamour I’d hoped to see from her.

In the Age of Technology people. In. The. Age. Of. Technology. Not sure where this look fit in with the night’s theme, but this pop diva disappointed me in her Givenchy ensemble. Maybe next year?

I honestly don’t know where to start with this one. The hair? The makeup? The gloves? Regardless of where we start we’ll end at the same place, disappointment. While the Marc Jacobs gown wasn’t a bad choice, the styling should have been reconsidered.

4th up BEST STYLING OF THE NIGHT

If Ciara’s H&M dress didn’t steal the show, her silver hair did! This shiny metallic hair was perfect for the theme and was still glamorous and perfect addition to her look.

Gigi Hadid has no doubt some of the best styling of the night from her $2000 futuristic manicure to her fabulous low ponytail and glittered deep side part. She looked drop dead gorgeous arriving in Tommy Hilfiger on the red carpet. With the perfect arm candy by her side, Zayn’s look, accessorized with robot arms, are an A+ on my list too.

Allison Sarofim graced the red carpet wearing a green tunic and flare leg pants topped with a cape bound to make a statement. With wild feathers on the outside and floral print on the inside, this look was worn and styled very well!

Kate Bosworth definitely had the best makeup and hair of the night. She accented her Dolce & Gabbana dress with a jeweled encrusted headpiece and showed everyone what it means to really look like a goddess.

5th up STARLETS IN SILVER

This red carpet was no stranger to silver sequins & appliques, this was one of the most direct ways to approach the “In the Age of Technology” theme. Here are some of my favorite starlets in silver from the 2016 Met Gala. Ladies like Brie Larson in Proenza Schouler, Jourdan Dunn in Balmain, Rita Ora in Vera Wang, Cindy Crawford in Balmain, Naomi Watts in Burberry, and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West in Balmain all stunned in metallic and silver.

That wraps up my list of looks from the 2016 Met Gala. Some one please tell Rihanna it’s not okay to skip these type of events! Until next time, -whit
