This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD ATL chapter.

1. A Man has Been Arrested in an NYC Cathedral with Gasoline

A man has been arrested after walking into New York’s St Patrick’s Cathedral carrying two full gasoline cans, lighter fluid, and lighters, police say. “An individual walking into an iconic location like St Patrick’s cathedral carrying over four gallons of gasoline, two bottles of lighter fluid, and lighters, is something we would have grave concern over,” Deputy Police Commissioner Miller said.

2. What Happened?

They say guards confronted the 37-year-old as he entered the Manhattan church on Wednesday evening. Deputy police commissioner John Miller noted that the suspicious incident occurred just two days after a fire gutted Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris. Guards confronted the 37-year-old as he entered the Manhattan church and the suspect began spilling gasoline onto the ground.   When confronted outside the cathedral, the man told officers his vehicle had run out of fuel and he was cutting through the cathedral to get to it. He was arrested when police checked the van and saw it was not out of gasoline. “We don’t know what his mindset was,” Mr. Miller told reporters.

3. Was It Terrorism?

Deputy police commissioner John Miller noted that the “suspicious” incident occurred just two days after a fire gutted Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris. The NYPD deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism however said it was “too early to say” whether terrorism was a motive.

We live in trying times. So much as Americans and just citizens of the world we have lately been seeing an increasing number of terroristic incidents and mass violence. Times are certainly changing in our generation. While some things in society are getting better, some things appear to be getting worse. It is up to us to be the change we want to see in the world. Hopefully we can all learn to love each other to stop the senseless violence. I say treat others as you would like to be treated.
