DIY Graduation Cap Ideas for SCAD Majors

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD ATL chapter.

With spring quarter 2016 coming to a close, some of us will finish our final year at SCAD. It’s time to wrap up our portfolios, senior films and internships. It’s also time to pick up our cap and gown. Yet, when picking up our graduation uniforms there’s still one final project left to do that adds a personalized touch to the big day ahead. It’s traditional to decorate your cap and when you go to an art school, your family is going to expect a great one. In case you are creatively drained, here are some ideas for certain majors that will not dissapoint.

Television

Television majors have it fairly easy. Just pick a quote from a show and you are good to go. However, if there are too many to chose from you can always make it more about the process of creating it. Try decorating the cap to look like a film slate or camera. You can even write, “That’s a wrap!” otherwise known as the best words to hear on set. Even if you aren’t a television major, you can still put a quote from one of your favorite television shows onto your cap.

For video game design, there may be more options out there than you think. Personally, I think anyone who sees your Pokemon cap will be full of envy. Not to mention your parents will have an easy time spotting you at the graduation ceremony: just tell them to look for the giant Pikachu!

Animation

I’m not an animation major, but my cap may look like I am. There are so many cute ideas for this one! Any Disney-inspired cap will work for your major. The possibilites are endless, hopefully just like your future.

Writing

Yes, I know the first one is a Doctor Who quote, but it fits writers perfectly. Writers will have a more difficult time with this, mainly because there aren’t as many visuals to go with your major. However, there are some ideas. You could put a quote from your favorite book or print off your favorite book cover and glue it to the top. You could even add writing-related utensils on the cap such as pencils, books, paper, typewriter or a bunch of letters.

If painting is not in your wheelhouse, it’s OK! Try arranging some of your own pictures on top of your hat. You could use Polaroids (like the one above) or you could blow up one giant picture. If you are feeling bold, make the cap look like a camera. Or put a quote from one of your favorite photographers or professors.

Fashion/Fashion Marketing

Fashion or fashion marketing majors should think of decorating a grad cap as a nice break from making clothes. Who knows, maybe this will inspire you to create a hat line in the future? Or, more than likely, it will make you swear off hats forever. A quick solution is to make a bow out of measuring tape. Another is to put a quote from a fellow fashion designer.

Remember, this should be fun! You are almost done with college and it’s a time to celebrate. Best of all, no one is going to be grading your craftsmanship on this project.

Jordan Di Pirro was born in Detroit, Michigan. She lived there for most of her life until coming to Atlanta for school. At SCAD she is a television production major with a minor in writing. She may or may not have a Harry Potter obsession. Her friends are currently planning an intervention on her behalf. Please send an email if interested in attending.
