5 Must Watch TV Shows To Celebrate Women’s History Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD ATL chapter.

This month is about celebrating the boss ass women that are in life or the women that stand before you. That is right it is Women’s History Month. In honor of Women’s History Month, you can stream these shows and see these badass women on screen that are a good representation of what a strong and powerful woman is from Sutton Brandy from the hit Freeform show The Bold Type from the iconic one-liners from Samantha Jones in Sex and The City. If that does not scream girl power, I don’t know what does.

1. Sex and The City- Whether you are a hopeless romantic like Charlotte or you a girl who is a career pioneer like Miranda. This is a show for you! From one-night stands to high fashion. Sex and The City is about four girlfriends Charlotte, Samantha, Carrie, and Miranda who are trying to navigate the world of New York City to being single to being in love to marriage to careers, and of course SEX. This show wasn’t just a show it was a revolution. This show was ahead of its time from discussing gender discrimination in the workplace from the societal stigma of being single in your 30’s to destigmatizing the taboo of talking about sex. SATC has all the feels from hilarious moments to actual good advice to use in your own personal life. So  please grab your girlfriends for a girl’s night and grab a bunch of cosmos and get ready to love these girls like they are your actual BFF’s in your head.

                                                                            2. The Bold Type- Inspired by Cosmopolitan magazine editor Joanna Coles life. The hit Freeform show The Bold Type is about three career-driven women who work at a magazine called Scarlett.  Sutton, the quirky fashionista, Jane, the type-A go-getter, Kat, the bad-ass who is not afraid to break the rules. This show explores love, how to explore sexuality and identity, fashion, and most importantly learning how to find your voice and stand up and fight for what you believe in. The reason this is a women empowerment show is because it focuses on positive, supportive friendship in comparison to other friendships in the media that are more on a frenemy basis. No more backstabbing, undermining, and no one-upping each other that doesn’t exist in The Bold Type. That is not the only reason why you should tune in to the show. The other reason why you should tune in is that it showcases a positive work environment amongst women and that is important to showcase not just in the media but in reality, as well. TUNE IN AT APRIL 9TH ON FREEFORM TO WATCH THE RECENT SEASON.

3. Insecure- Feel insecure sometimes. Well, Issa Rae does from the HBO hit show Insecure. This comedy show takes place in Los Angeles with young, successful black women. This show is relatable it is like you are having a glass of white wine with girlfriends around the couch talking about relatable conservations and concerns. The show touches on conservation such as talking about the men they love from culturally ignorant white co-workers that black women go through on a daily basis from bisexuality to marriage to interracial marriages as well. This show is definitely a good watch it brings the funny, the sexy, and the girl power all in one.

4. Jane the Virgin- Now this show is interesting, to say the least. For starters it is about a girl named Jane Villanueva who is a virgin waiting to have sex after marriage until one unfortunate circumstance at the gyno will change her life forever where she gets accidentally artificially inseminated, so now weirdly enough is a pregnant virgin. Even though the plot sounds a little bizarre. It is a light-hearted and family-oriented show. It is important about three generations of women living under the same roof and dealing with everyday issues. The reason this show is the must watch is because from episode to episode it screams feminism in the third degree from promoting diversity in the media from expressing the challenges of being a working mother. To all the mothers that have a little bit of ‘mommy guilt, but spoiler alert it is definitely a cliff hanger show that will lead to some WTF and OMG’S moments so don’t say I didn’t warn you. TUNE IN FOR THE NEWEST AND FINAL SEASON OF JANE THE VIRGIN AIRING TOMORROW ON CW.

                                                                             5. Big Little Lies- If this show does not scream girl power, I don’t know what does! The HBO hit Big Little Lies is about Celeste, Madeleine, and Jane that are doting mothers with successful husbands and beautiful children with stunning homes but in the end what actually exists in the community leds to rumors, fractured relationships, and of course a suspenseful centered murderer. The series brings to light the touching topics like domestic abuse and rape talking and the struggles that  comes with it. The series is also hits the ground running for bringing awareness for the social media platform the #MeToo movement for victims and survivors that are coming forward. Through episode to episode, the indeclinable rage has been boiling under surface time and time again as the character Celeste and Jane are waiting to break through at the right moment to fight back against it. The reason why you should tune in to this hit HBO show is because it offers its female characters in the show with a sense of bluntness as the show progresses and these women are finding their voices in their own way and they are done apologizing for it.
