Ways to Spread Kindness this Holiday Season

With the holiday season upon us, it is easy to get caught up in all of the chaos that comes with it. Holiday shopping, family functions, parties, dinners, all of it. Amidst all of business and running around, it is important to take a step back and remember the little ways we can spread some extra kindness throughout our communities. If you are looking for some inspiration, here are some ideas!

make holiday care kits

Assemble small packages with essential hygiene items such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine products. Also include other items, such as gloves and socks, non-perishable snacks, water, first aid items, and some cozier items. Blankets, small towels, and warm weather gear are all great examples of this. A simple, yet effective way to show someone you are thinking of them this holiday season

Donate non-perishables to a local food pantry

Food pantries are extra busy during the holidays, providing help to those struggling with winter bills and holiday expenses. Pick up a few extra cans of food or some boxes of pasta during your next grocery run, or organize a mini food drive with friends or coworkers. This small gesture can provide a family with a meal for the next few days. Be sure to contact the local food pantry and ask if they are in need of any specific food items!

write holiday cards or letters

Send holiday cards and letters to your local nursing home, hospital, or community shelters. Share cheerful jokes, wishes, and positive messages. Add cheerful notes and colorful drawings to brighten someone’s day.

random acts of kindness

Random acts of kindness could be anything; small gestures go a long way.

  • Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while
  • Leave a nice note
  • Clean the snow off a car
  • Help shovel a neighbor’s driveway
  • Pay for the person’s coffee behind you
  • Hold the door open for someone

adopt a family

Adopting a family is essentially sponsoring a family in need and fulfilling their holiday wish lists. Upon signing up, you get a family’s profile, shop, and wrap gifts, and drop them off. It is a hands-on way to truly make a difference for a family this season. This small gesture can leave a lasting impact.

leave out treats for delivery workers

This time of the year brings exponentially more packages than any other time of the year. With that, more work is put on delivery workers. Leaving out a plate of cookies, some hot chocolate, holiday treats, or even a card can show appreciation and make someone’s day.

The holiday season can be hectic, but it is important to slow down and make an impact on those less fortunate than us. Every act of kindness helps, no matter how big or small; they also bring warmth and joy to your own life. So, I encourage you to choose one small way to give back and watch how far it can go.
