On Wednesday, September 23rd, ‘The Love Hypothesis’ movie came out on Amazon Prime, and I was so excited. I had read the book by Ali Hazelwood in 2022, and it was such a good book; I read it in three days.
I am always one to say that the book is always better than the movie, but this movie might have changed my mind; it was that good. Although it was a little cringe at times, it was super cute.
For those who don’t know, The Love Hypothesis follows the life of Olive Smith, played by Lili Reinhart, a PhD student at Standard University who is researching pancreatic cancer. Olive’s best friend, Anh wants to date Olive’s old crush, Jeremy, but feels guilty since Olive has feelings for him.
So, to try to convince Anh that she no longer has feelings for Jeremy, she lies to Anh and says that she is dating someone. She tells Anh that she is going on a date, when she is really studying at the lab, and Anh comes to check to see if she actually is on a date, so Olive panics and kisses the first person that she sees in the hallway. Which happens to be Dr. Adam Carlston, aka Dr. Evil, played by Tom Bateman. Adam is a young, respected professor at Stanford.
They decide to make a deal to fake-date; Olive needs to convince Anh that she has a boyfriend, and Adam needs to convince his boss that he is in a relationship so he can get his funding for the next school year. So, they start fake dating, and of course, I will not say any spoilers, but I feel like we all know what happens in the end.
I love a good fake dating romcom, and this movie fits that exact description. It also shows women in the STEM field, which I believe is very important and sheds light on the fact that it is a very male-dominated field.
I feel that this movie also goes along with the book really well. The casting was so good and pretty much exactly what I pictured in the book, and the characters acted how I thought they would in the book too. For the most part, I always think that the movie portrays the story differently from the book, but they did really well in this movie.
Overall, I really liked this movie, and it will probably be my newest hyperfixation for the month. I definitely recommend watching it even if you haven’t read the book, but especially if you have.
