Nostalgia Is A Mind’s Trick

Have you ever experienced a moment in your life when you reflected on a moment in your past and wished that you could go back and fix it? Well, if you have, then let me tell you why you should stay in the present instead of going back and reflecting on the past. When you think about the past and think about how you should’ve handled the situation better, it’s an irrelevant thought to have because, at the end of the day, you can’t change anything.

Everything in your life happens for a reason because of the domino effect. Sometimes, when we focus on all the bd things that happened in the past, we forget to focus on all the good things that are happening right now. Instead of wishing we could re-do an experience in a better way than it happened, we should appreciate how everything we’ve experienced in our life has gotten us to where we are now.

As human beings, we tend to romanticize our pasts because our memories have a favoritism for comforting moments rather than hard ones. When we look back at past experiences, our minds pick and choose which part of that memory we remember more instead of the full reality of what actually happened. For example, it’s very easy for you to remember meeting new friends on the first day of school instead of the stress you probably felt over the possibility of not fitting in.

This selective memory creates a contrast effect for us because we think that it’d be better to go back to the past and relive our memories without the struggles that were happening in our lives then as well. The longing for the past that we experience is a very beautiful illusion, but it won’t automatically make everything perfect in the way that we imagine it will.

When you think about everything that you experience in your life, it’s just a giant version of a domino effect, and everything, even your bad experiences, has turned you into the person you are today. It’s very tempting to look back at a memory and wish you could erase a cringey moment, toxic relationship, or a failure from your life, but you wouldn’t have some of the best things in your life now if you did.

Changing just one minuscule thing from your past can create a major setback because it would also change everything good that happened after that. The sadness, betrayal, and anger that you felt from that one horrible experience made you realize what and who makes you happy in your life. Every failure, mistake, or painful moment in your life was very necessary for your own personal growth. You can’t take out the bad parts without taking out the good parts as well.

At the end of the day, this should be a reminder that whatever you’re experiencing right now, whether it’s embarrassing, heartbreaking, or exciting, is a memory that you will look back on. We spend so much of our time romanticizing our past instead of enjoying the good moments in the present, and then we wonder where all the time went. Instead of letting your life pass you by, waiting for it to get better, you should experience all the meaningful moments that it has to offer you.

Your past is everything that has turned you into who you are now, but your present is where you get to actually experience new things, so experience it while it’s currently happening. Having study sessions, hangouts with friends, or even heartfelt talks with the people you love are all snapshots of your life, in which you will remember one day, whether you decide to see them as good or bad is on you.
