Winter is often hated by many because of the cold winds, icy sidewalks, and short days. If you look closer, though, winter could turn into your favorite season of the year. Between the holidays, cozy traditions, and numerous activities that bring us all together, winter balances celebration, reflection, and community.
My favorite season has always been winter because of the holidays, obviously, and because my favorite sport is played during the winter months, hockey. From ages three to 18, I was on the ice every day from November to March playing, and they were always the best months of the year.
I also love being able to wake up each morning with the sun already shining and a cup of hot chocolate waiting for me downstairs. The warmth throughout my house on cold winter mornings brings me so much joy and motivation.
We can also all agree that something about a fully lit Christmas tree decorated from top to bottom really just does something to the soul.
For college students, winter coincides with the most anticipated breaks of the academic calendar. After the stress of finals, the holiday season arrives, and that alone is a gift itself to us.
The holidays like Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year remind us college students that life has more to it than grades.
Winter is also full of activities that can appeal to all of us, many with no cost at all. Skiing and snowboarding are some of my favorites, but I also enjoy good indoor gatherings with all my family and friends playing cards or watching movies.
Although it is freezing, it is the season of comfort. Sweaters and blankets become staples in our day-to-day living, creating a sense of warmth and security. Warm drinks like tea, coffee, and my personal favorite, hot chocolate, become more than just beverages; they allow us to slow down.
For all of us, this season offers a space to reflect. With the new year, it is a natural time for setting resolutions (which we almost never stick to). New Year’s motivates us in a strange but amazing way and sets us up for success starting the spring semester.
Ultimately, winter aligns perfectly with college life. It offers celebration through the holidays and many campus events, comfort through all of our cozy traditions, and a reflection through the changing of the years and quiet moments of renewal.
Rather than seeing winter as a season we have to endure, we should embrace it as a season to thrive. It is the best time for friendships to deepen, memories to be made, and create a life that feels festive and meaningful all in one.
