Jay Shetty is an award-winning podcaster, storyteller, author, life coach, and former monk. Shetty has accumulated billions of views and millions of followers online, especially on his Instagram page and YouTube platform. Jay Shetty is of British-Indian descent and grew up living with his parents and younger sister in Barnet, North London. Shetty grew up in a Hindu family, however, his household was not the most religious. As a teenager, Shetty attended talks by people who had to overcome adversity and read books for inspiration.

While Shetty studied management in London at Cass Business School, a monk named Gauranga Das happened to give a talk at the university. Shetty was 18 at the time, and Das became his mentor, which brought him to a monkhood journey. This inspired him to change his outlook and trajectory in life. Jay became inspired to make a difference in the world over the course of his four years at Cass. Shetty successfully graduated with a first class BSc Honors Degree in Behavioral Science from Cass Business School. After this, he chose to leave everything behind to live as a monk in India. Using his experiences in both the real world and from living as a monk, he began teaching online courses and coaching classes. His vision is to spread and teach what he learned as a monk to diversify his income through multiple different media streams, spreading his movement to “make wisdom viral!”

It’s All About Perception

Jay Shetty shared an exercise he does with his clients in the podcast. It is to go for a walk and describe a leaf they see on the ground. After they describe it, it may not always match its color, consistency, and texture of it. They learn to understand, they put judgments only on what they could see on the outside. Similarly, the pictures we see online don’t always equate to someone’s reality. We should try to avoid forming opinions about others based on a small percentage of what is seen online. We typically present ourselves in ways that are accepted by what communities we are a part of or support.

Inner Child Work

Jenner opens up to Jay Shetty that she works with her therapist on healing her inner child. Jenner found a photo of herself as a small child, which she keeps by her mirror. This exercise was recommended by her therapist, to remember that we should treat ourselves as if what we tell ourselves, is what we are telling that kid. Self-affirmation is a key exercise for people looking to heal trauma or to be kind to themselves, the same way that we show kindness to others.

Jay Shetty’s motivating words and ideas, encourage wisdom, positivity, and personal growth despite one’s own beliefs, upbringing, cultural background, career or goals. Shetty launched his Facebook page back in 2016. He released some riveting podcasts through collaborations with inspiring celebrities including Lily Collins, Mackelmore, Selena Gomez, Priyanka Chopra, and Oprah Winfrey. Being in the pursuit of happiness can lead to more prosperity and excitement for us. We should be willing to change to better both ourselves and the world.
