Five Off-Campus Trips Worth the Drive

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SBU chapter.

1.     The Pfeiffer Nature Center- Portville, N.Y.

About 15 minutes outside of Olean, The Pfeiffer Nature Center is one of my go to places for the fall. Whether it’s during the day or late at night, The Pfeiffer is beautiful. It’s especially pretty when the leaves change and you’re surrounded by nothing but foliage and good friends. There’s a variety of trails to take all the way up to a beautiful scenic overlook with an even better view. If you can’t make it during the day, head up at night to see the stars perfectly. It’s far away from lights in town and it’s almost guaranteed to see a shooting star.

2.     The Cider Mill- Portville, N.Y.

Close by to the nature center is the Cummins Cider Mill. This place has the best donuts and cider in the area and always puts me in the mood for fall. Not a lot of people know about this place and it’s only open seasonally so be sure to get there soon!

3.     The Falling Leaves Festival- Ellicottville, N.Y.

This is Ellicottville’s oldest and largest fall festival when all the leaves have changed to their vibrant shades. This year it will be Saturday October 10th and Sunday the 11th. There are so many great restaurants in Ellicottville and the view is amazing from Holiday Valley, so be sure to check it out!

4.     Pumpkinville- Great Valley, N.Y.

This is such an easy trip to make with a few friends to pick out pumpkins and just chill with some hot apple cider. After a long week of classes, sometimes getting lost in a pumpkin patch is the perfect escape.

5.     The Dandy House Ghost Tours- Hinsdale, N.Y.

This trip will definitely be for the more daring students. The Dandy House (a.k.a. The Hinsdale House) is one of the most haunted locations in Western New York. A few paranormal related T.V. shows have been filmed their and several mediums have done readings on the house. It’s been the center of paranormal debates for years and this October the owners of the house will be opening it up for ghost tours. Be sure to check out their Facebook page and website for more information.
