The only redeeming quality about the beginning of the end of warm weather in Western New York is the media that is most fit for the fall season. Below is a short list of what I like to watch and listen to as I try to make the most of the cold and dreary days ahead.

My sweet Laura Palmer. She is the 90s horror queen forever.

This song so easily accompanies the original Alice in Wonderland.
“House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals
This is an autumn classic.
“Behold! The Night Mare” by The Smashing Pumpkins
Another creepy love song from The Smashing Pumpkins? Yes.
“Harvest Moon” by Neil Young
I wanted to throw in a sweet one. But if you have ever watched Big Little Lies, this song will be the scariest on this list.
“Secrets” by The Cure
I could’ve put almost any song from The Cure here, but this one has been speaking to me.
“Tremens” by Sonic Youth
Gorgeous and creepy-ass instrumental.
“Dust Bowl” by Ethel Cain
I saw Ethel Cain live last fall, so this time of year belongs to her.

Twin Peaks
This show changed lives and continues to do so decades later because David Lynch was a genius, of course.
The Shards
This new Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis show, inspired by Ellis’ novel, is about a serial killer in Los Angeles in the 1980s. Also, the cast is gorgeous.
American Horror Story
AHS is my favorite show of all time. The first episodes of the new season were released yesterday, and my expectations for the rest of the episodes are probably way too high.
Scream Queens
I really love Ryan Murphy’s stuff, okay? I know he can suck sometimes, but you can’t deny the classics. Also, Emma Roberts and Glen Powell together are a work of art.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen
I watched this show a few months ago when it first came out, and I still think about it.
The Haunting of Hill House
I haven’t read the book, but the Netflix show was amazing, so I have to recommend it.
Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches
The plot of this show is so creepy; I loved it. It definitely didn’t hurt that the main character was played by Alexandra Daddario.
Gossip Girl
I think I might be on my eleventh rewatch. If I had the time, I would also be rewatching The Vampire Diaries, Gilmore Girls, and Pretty Little Liars.
Books:
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter
I haven’t finished this yet, but I read the first quarter in one sitting because it was so good.
The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe
This is a short story and a surprisingly easy read.
The Stranger by Albert Camus
Basic, I know. But his indifference just horrifies me.
Movies:
Woman of the Hour
Directed by Anna Kendrick, Woman of the Hour is a hauntingly realistic portrayal of the uneasiness a woman feels doing something as simple as walking through a parking lot to her car and why she is afraid in the first place.
Inland Empire
This movie requires quite an open mind, but being unsettled is the whole point. Also, I love Laura Dern.
The Babysitter and The Babysitter: Killer Queen
Unlike Halloween, The Babysitter movies don’t employ the classic horror trope of a babysitter in danger of death by a serial killer. These movies are not that scary, but they make me laugh.
