A Few Ways To Relieve Stress

The semester has gradually eased out of the introductory, easy work and into full-time schoolwork. Students are already on the grind, writing papers and preparing for tests. I’m already starting to feel the pressure from schoolwork, and we are only three weeks into the semester. It is important to manage stress instead of letting it build up and get too overwhelming. Some outlets that I find helpful to relieve stress include writing, drawing and exercising. Here is why.

Writing:

When I feel overwhelmed with all the classwork that I have, I like to take a break. After scrolling through social media or watching a show, I still want to feel productive, but I do not want to go back to doing schoolwork. Sometimes I will choose a topic that I am actually interested in writing about and write. This story could turn into an entry for the school’s newspaper or just end up in a folder on my laptop. If you give this a try you can write anything about any topic you choose. It could be a creative short story, a poem, an editorial piece, etc. Consider trying it out the next time you are feeling stressed but still want to be productive.

Drawing:

I took art class throughout high school. I miss having the break in my day to sit for 85 minutes and work on a drawing or painting that I was really devoted to. It was such a nice way to relieve stress. Sometimes when I am feeling overworked, I take a break just to doodle. If you try this, your art does not have to be a masterpiece. You also do not need fancy materials either, a piece of printer paper works fine. Sometimes I like to draw in the margins of a notebook or even on sticky notes. Listening to music while drawing and just putting a pencil to paper and letting the movements of the music guide you is really relaxing. Try drawing as a break from schoolwork to let your creativity calm your mind.

Exercise:

My body is often sore after sitting at my desk for hours of reading, typing and studying. Getting up and stretching feels great. Doing deeper stretches or yoga are great stress relievers. It makes me feel at peace. Going for a walk or run is also a good way to relieve stress. You can focus on each step or stride, the surround environment or your breathing, instead of all of your schoolwork and responsibilities. Getting exercise is an instant mood booster for me, and it helps me forget about everything that is stressing me out.

Making time for yourself and taking breaks is important. Feel free to try these methods to take your mind off of whatever stress or worries you have.
