Good reads by Black Authors

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Savannah chapter.

10 Inspiring Black Authors

Since I attend an HBCU, I have a heightened sense of pride instilled in me for being black. With this pride and my love for literature, I have made it a goal for myself to read literary works by African Americans who were inspiring during dark times of oppression. Here is a list of works from brilliant black authors that I am currently reading or plan to read in the near future.

  1. Cotton Candy on a Rainy Day– Nikki Giovanni (personal favorite)
  2. Their Eyes Were Watching- Zora Neale Hurston
  3. Another Country- James Baldwin
  4.  The Color Purple– Alice Walker
  5. Song of Solomon- Toni Morrison
  6. I Know Why The Caged Birds Sing -Maya Angelou
  7. Women, Race, and Class- Angela Davis
  8. A Raisin in The Sun- Lorraine Hansberry
  9. Fences -August Wilson
  10. The Autobiography of Malcom X– Malcom X
Morgan Croff
